IMPROVEMENT IN CONVERTIBLE CARRIAGE-POLES.

Be it known that I, FRANCIS FOWLER, of West Haven, in thecounty of. New Haven, and State of Oonnecticut, have invented a new and improved Mode for Convertible Carriage-Poles, for adapting poles made for any carriage to any other carriage of different construction; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,-

clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,'reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-- i Figure l is a plain view of the pole and shifting-gear, and

Figure 2 is a side view. of the shifting or converting-rods.

A A, fig. 1, is the cross-bar of the pole, made of iron or other metal, to which the pole B B is attached by a metallic clasp or socket, b b, which is a part of the cross-bar. O G are braces, attached by bolts to the ends of the cross-bar and to the pole B B. D D are the shifting-rods, having a square opening or eye through the head a a, through which the cross-bar A A passes, and an eye through the base a a, through which the shacklebolt it it of the axle-tree passes, and attaches the pole to the axle-tree of the carriage, both of which holes are shown atd and h in fig. 2, which figure gives a side view of the'shiftingwods. g is a thumb-screw,for fastening the rod when in place. The metallic cross-bar is made square, or other shape, adapted to the eye-holes in the head of the shifting-rods, for such length as is necessary, for extending or contracting the distance between the shifting-rods, so as to make the distance between the shifting-rods conform to the distance between the shackles on any carriage axle-tree, the shifting-rods sliding along easily on the cross bar, through a space of as many inches as is desired, thus converting the Pole made for-any one carriage into one equally adapted to any other carriage. v

The manufacturer of the pole puts the'shifting-rocls D D in place on the cross-barA A, which passes through the eyes a a, where they are made'fast, or loosened, by means of the thumb-screws g. When the thumb-screws are loosened, the shifting-rods are eas'ilyslid along the cross bars, either way,-until they are at the same distance apart'as the shackles on the axle-tree of the carriage are, and then the shackle-bolts it h are readily passed through'the eyes h k and made fast, and the attachment is completed. I

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- The attachment of removable poles by means of the shifting-rods D D, which slide either way along the metallic cross-bar A A.
