Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
E. H. GILLMAN, OF MONTPELIER, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,706, dated October 6, 1868.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, E. H. GILLMAN, of Montpelier, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Method of Constructing Sleighs.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of metallic sleigh-runners so constructed and attached to the body of the sleigh as to dispense with the use of beams, posts, and braces.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
I construct the runners A A, Drawing No. 1, of steel or other metal, and bend them in front, in the usual form of s1eigh-runners, extending them in front to the top of the dash G, which is iirmly bolted or screwed to them, as seen by the drawing, and marked E E E E. The sleigh-bottom is also made fast to the runners and dash by bolts I I E E.
Near the back part of the sleigh-body, upon the inside, is the boa-rd or piece of wood J, passing from one side of the body to the other, answering as a support for the sleigh-seat, and to which the runners, being bent upward at the rear, as seen in drawing No. 2, are fastned by means of bolts or screws marked If F F. The draw-rods D D pass through the runners at the back part of the sleigh, and are secured by nuts, as seen at K, and pass through the runners in front, terminating with a hook or eye, as seen at M M, through which is passed the rod L, upon which the shafts or thills may bey fastened.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The draw-rods D D for sleighs, for the purA poses and in the manner and form set forth;
E. H. GILLMAN.
