TO ALL .WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, B. F. BEAM, of Ada, in the county of Hardin, and in theState of Ohio, have` invented a new and improved Combined Shovel-Plough and Cultivator; and I (lo-hereby declare that the following `is ak full, clear, and exact description thereof, Ireference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in whieh 1 l Figures' 1, 2, and 3 are plans or top views, showing respectively my improved implement arranged for a. double, triple, and single-'shovel plough.

The nature of my invention consists in so constructing the parts of a cultivator that it may be used with oner two, or three shovels, and the change of condition effected with facility, without making any material alteration in. its general structure, whilefat the same time it'will be so balanced that it will not overset when left to rest on two' shovels, as seen in iig. 1--a -quality which will greatly enhance the ease with which it may be worked. v
In the drawings, A is the draught-beam, to which are attached the handlesB B, a. shovel or plough, C, and al coulter, D, when this may be deemediexpedient. The front end of the draught-beam may be furnished with a clevis, if desirable, for adjusting the draught. When it is required Vto use two shovels, as in iig. 1, a sliding adjustable gauge-beam, E, is? used. An elevationof this is shown Vin g. 5.. This gauge-beam has a cleft or mortise .in itsuper edge, iu which is received the draught-beam A, to a depth nearly equal to its vertical \vidth. The upper edge of the beam is somewhat cambercdor arched, so that it is highest at its middle. A metal bar,- F, bent down at its ends, as shown in fig.v5,is bolted along on the top of the beam E, in such a manner that it may be tightly held on the draught-beam A, and prevented from sliding along on it after being fixed at any point in its length. A space, equal to the thickness of the draught-beam QA, is left between the ends of the gauge-beam E and the turned-down ends of the bar F. Another shovel, C', is now bolted by the front end of its draught-beam, a, to the front end of the draught-beam A, while the draught-beam a passes through and is held from lateral motion in the space 'between the end of the beam E and bar F. A guide-bar, G, is bolted to the other side of the front end ofthe draught-beam A, and its rear end, whichis bent for the purpose, is engaged by the beam E and bar F, on the opposite side from the shovel C. The front ends of the beam a of the shovel C are heldby two bolts b which pass through them and the beam. The Coulter D, when used,
may also be secured bywone or both bolts b.. When three shovels are wanted, it is only necessary to substitute aniither shovel and beam, C a, for the guide-bar G. v
The shovels may be setat any "required and proper distance from each other by changing the position of the gauge-beam E on the beam A, securing it in its place by drawing down the bar F by its bolts, and loosening one and tightening the other of the bolts` b b.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'Ihe gauge-beam E, constructed substantially as described, in combination with the beams A and a, guidehar G, shovels or ploughs C C', or any of them, and co'ulter D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
