MORRIS H. GERSTLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ATTACHNINT FOR CORSETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 767,881, dated August 16,- 1904. Application filed Inly 3, 1903. Serial No. 164,217. (No model.)
To all whom, t muy concern:
Beit known that I, MORRIS H. GERSTLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have inventeda new and Improved Attachment for Corsets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to combined garmentsupporters and skirt-retainers; and it consists, substantially, in certain parts and details and combinations thereof hereinafter particularly described, and lpointed out in the claims.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide means for overcoming numerous disadvantages and objections found to exist with many other devices hitherto devised for purposes similar to those which my device is designed to accomplish and also to provide a corset attachment which is simple in construction, easily applied and removed, and also comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. l
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to which is effective and reliable in use, besides being strong and durable and possessing the capacity for long and repeated service.
The above and additional objects are attained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a front view illustrating my improvements as applied to the front of an ordinary corset while the latter is in use upon the person, a partof the corset-waist being broken out. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section taken substantially in the plane of the breken line 2 2 in Fig. l, and Fig. 8 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken substantially in the plane of the line 3 3 in Fig. l.
Before proceeding with a more detailed description it may be stated that in the form of my improvements herein shown I provide a plate having a shank of special construction by which to enable the' same to be detachably connected with one of the fastening-studs of an ordinary corset-front, said shank being of further special construction for adjustable connection therewith of a retaining device for the waistband of one or more skirts, the entire structure being exceedingly' light in weight and capable of being worn without inconvenience or discomfort, and while I have herein represented my improvements in a certain preferred embodiment it will be understood, of course, that I am not limited to the precise details thereof in practice, since immaterial changes therein may be resorted to coming within the scope of my invention.
The device is worn beneath theordinary corset-waist, and a part of the retaining device for the skirt is passed through one of the buttonholes of the waist7 at the front, so that the said device also tends to prevent the front of such waist from disarrangement, as will be apparent.
Specific reference being had to the accompanying drawings by the designating characters marked thereon, l represents the front of an ordinary corset, comprising two parts united together by the usual slotted plate 2 and stud 3, and I indicates a waist such as is usually worn as a covering for the corset, the parts of the front of said waist being united lby simple button-fastenings 5, as shown.
My improved device comprises a thin plate 6 of any desired shape to lie flatly against the front of the corset, said plate being formed with a slot 7, through which is passed the looped flexible member 8 of a suspender or supporter, said member having attached thereto in any suitable way two branches9, tothe end of each of which are adjustably connected at lO the duplicate elastic strips 1l, provided at the ends thereof with ordinary clasps l2 for attachment to the upper part of the stockings to support or maintain the latter properly in place upon the limbs. The said plate is formed or provided with a shank 13, having a head let, said shank being formed with a vertical slot l5, and the head having therein a plurality of horizontal slits 16, disposed suitable distances apart, as shown, and forming intermediate outwardly-sprung ribs 16a. For a suitable distance from one of `its edges (the inner edge) the said shank is slitted to form two tongues 17 and 17 ,which are sprung inwardly so as to exert a pressure against the IOO front of the corset, it being remarked that the plate and the shank and its head are constructed, preferably,of elastic or spring metal,
the slotted portion of said shank being' curved or sprung outwardly, as shown in F ig'. 2, so as to exert a pressure against the under side of the head of the stud 3, to which the shank of the plate is applied. The said ribs 16a are for the adjustable attachment to the head 14 of the shank of the loop 18 of a skirt-retainer 19, of flat metal, the said loop being formed by bending' the body of the retainer at 21, Fig. 2, the two parts of such lbody being brought together and provided with a slide 22 for preventing disengagement of the retainer from the particular one of said ribs to which attachment thereof may be made. The upper end of this retaining device is formed with a hook 23, which is made to project through one of the buttonholes in the corset-waist, as shown, so as to overlap the edge of the waist portion of an ordinary skirt 24, and thus prevent the latter from rising upwardly while being worn.
vTo vattach or apply the device to a corset, the spring-tongues 17 and 17KL are slipped beneath the slotted plate of any desired one of the clasps at the front of the corset, the shank of the button of this particular clasp being made to pass between the ends of said tongues and the head of the button being forced through the slot in the shank and above the edges of the shank, so that the structure will thus be held firmly fastened in place. The hook of the retaining device is next passed through the proper buttonhole in the corsetwaist, and a part of the edge of the underskirt may then be placed beneath such hook, and thus will the eifectiveness of my improvements be apparent.
lf desired, the front of the corset may be provided with a reinforce 26, but this forms Ino part of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An attachment for corsets, comprising a plate having a shank formed with a slot, and
constructed at one side of the slot with springtongues adapted to permit slipping' between the ends thereof of the shank of the button of a corset-clasp, said plate being provided with supporting devices for stockings.
2. An attachment for corsets, comprising a plate having a shank formed with a slot, and constructed at one side of the slot with springtongues adapted to permit slipping between the ends thereofl of the shank of the button of a corset-clasp, said plate being provided with supporting devices for stockings, and having a skirt-retaining' device attached thereto.
3. An attachment for corsets, comprising a plate having a shank formed with a slot, and constructed at one side of the slot with tongues adapted to permit slipping between the ends thereof` of the shank of the button of a corsetclasp,.said shank having a skirt-retainer attached thereto, and the shank and said tongues being sprung outwardly in reverse directions.
4. An attachment for corsets, comprising a plate having a shank formed with a head and provided with a slot therein, said shank being also constructed at one side of said slot with spring-tongues adapted to permit slipping between the ends thereof of the shank of the button of a corset-clasp, and said head being formed with ribs, and a skirt-retaining device adapted for attachment to either of said ribs.
5. An attachment for corsets, comprising a plate having outwardly-sprung ribs thereon, and a hooked skirt-retainer having a loop adapted for attachment to either of the ribs, and provided with a spring-slide.
6. The combination with hose-supporting straps and a central member connecting same, having skirt-depressing means, of means supporting said central member upon the person of a wearer, said means limiting movement of said central member in downward and lateral directions but permitting free upward movement thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MORRIS H. GERSTLE.
