dok- TO ALL WHOM IT MAY'CONCERN:
Be it known that I. WILLIAM L. THOMAS, of Middlebury, in the county of Summit, and State oi' Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedsteads'; and 1 do hereby declare Athat the following is. a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art-to inuhc end use thc sume, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is avertical longitudinal section of' my improved bedstead', taken through thc'linc' ft, iig. 2- Fignre 2 is a viewpof the under side or bottomof the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v
My invention hasfor its object to furnish. an improved bedstead-,so constructed and arranged that the head part of the bed may be raiscd'much or little to var v the position of the person lying upon the said bed, as desired; and it consists in the construct-ion and combination ot the parts by which this is effected, as here inafter more fully described. v v
A are the posts, B are the side-rails or boards, and C are the end-rails orlboards of the bedstead, about the construction ot' which' parts there is nothing-new.
D are sidc-bars, attached to the inner sides of theside-1-ails B of the bedstcad, uponwhich bars rest, AandA to which are attached the lower ends of' the oled springs E, that support the ends of the spring-slats F, that form the foot partfot' thebed-bottom. The sprin'g-slats F arelrept in place Yupon the springs E by means of.' short pins, Grattachcdto said slats, and which enter the upper ends of the said springs. l A
T he ends of the slats Flare made to move up end down vertically by having their ends enter vertical 2grooves in the inner sides ofthe side-rails B. If desired, triangular guides may beA attached to the inner sides of' the side-rails B, which enter angular notches in the ends 'of' the spring-sluts F, to guide said slats in their up-and-down movement. 3
VP is a frame, the-side of which that is towards the middle part of the bcdsteadn, is hinged to the supportingbars or rails D, and which, when lowered into a horizontal position, rests upon the said.supporting-rails To the ends of the frame P are attached side-bars H, with whichy and with the frame P, the spring-slats and coiled springs E are connected in the m'annenhereinbefore described with reference to the slats at the i'oot part of. the bedstead. A I
To the under/side of the hinged frame P are securely attached downwardlyfproject'inr braccdarms I, to the ends of which are attached' thc/endso'f th straps or cords J, the other ends of which 4,are attached4 to thc .shaft K. The-shaft K revolvesriiirbearings attached to the outer side of the 'head-posts A. The shaft K is revolved to raise and'lower the head part of the bed-bottom by means of a crank, L, attached to its projecting end, and it is held in 'any position to which it may be revolved by a pawl, MLpivotcd to the post A, and taliing hold of the teeth of a ratchet-wheel, N, attached to-'said shaft. By this construction, by revolving the shaft K in one direct-ion, the straps or `cordsd will be wound around it, drawing the lowerends of the 'braced arms I forward, and raising the head end of the hinged part of.,the bed-bottom. By turning the slat't K in the other direction, the cords or 'straps'.l' will 'he nnwoundi'roin it, allowing the said hinged part ot' the said bed-hintern to settle back, as desired.' i v i This construction allows the head part ofthe bed-bottom to be raised or lowered little or much, to cha-nge the position of the invalid without disturbing him in the least. I i
I claim as new, and desire tosecure byLetters Patent y The bcdstcad, constructed as described, and consisting of the side-rails Bv, strips D, end-rails G, .posts A, slats F, having,r pins'G, springs E, hingedsection P H, also provided with `spring-slats F E Cr, arms I, straps J; shaft K, ratchet and pawlM N, and crank L, when said side-rails Bare provided n for the ends of the spring-slats E, all arranged and operating as set forth.'` f Y WILLIAM L. THOMAS.
