ROSIVFLL H. TRUMPOUR, OF SPRINGBLUFF, MISSOURI.
HOLDER AND PROTECTOR FOR LABELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 763,128, dated June 21, 1904.
Application filed October l5, 1.903.
To all whom, it ntf/,y concern:
Be it known that I, ROswELL H. TRUMPOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springblufi', in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders and Protectors for Labels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in holders and protectors for labels, the object being' to provide means for holding' a label securely in place upon a bottle-or other object and for protecting the label from moisture or other damaging influences, thus lengthening the life olf the label and obviating the necessity of continually renewing the same, as is the case with the ordinary paper label when used upon bottles which are'in constant use, in which case the labels quickly become soiled or torn.
Another object of this invention is to provide a label which can be easily placed upon a bottle and readily detached therefrom or changed from one bottle to another when necessary, but which will be held securely in place while on the bottle.
These objects I attain by forming the label in the manner to be hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying' drawings, in which the same parts are designated by the same numerals of reference throughout the several views.
Figure l represents an elevation of a bottle, showing my improved label applied there',- to. Fig. 2 represents, on an enlarged scale, a horizontal section of the label, taken along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents, on a still larger scale, a vertical section of the label, taken along the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows in plan view a modified form of label for use upon square or rectangular bottles.
In carrying my invention into practice I `use a thin strip of resilient material l, which may be of brass, aluminium, or any other suitable material, and upon this strip 1 place an Serial No. 177,199. (No model.)
The label B, formed as hereinbefore described, is bent to correspond to the shape of the bottle upon which it is to be used. Thus in Figs. l and 2 I have shown a label bent inv the form of a ring adapted to encircle the round bottle A. The label is bent slightly smaller than the bottle, so that it will have to be sprung open when placed thereon and Will close tightly upon the bottle when in place, thus holding it securely in position. lVhile the resiliency of the label is sufhcient to hold it against accidental displacement, it
is not held so tightly but that it can be readily removed should its removal be necessary.
In Fig. i I have shown a label bent in the form of a rectangle for use upon square or rectangular bottles. In this form of label the rear ends of the sides 8 are bent closer together than where they join the front of the label, thus causing the label to cling closely to the bottle when in place.
It will be understood that labels made in accordance with my invention may be bent to fit any shape of bottle and still remain within the scope of the invention.
Among the many advantages possessed by IOO labels made in accordance with my invention may be mentioned the :following: The paper and printing' or writing being protected from moisture and other damaging influences, the labels are very durable and will last for an indefinite time. They are easily removed or changed 'from one bottle to another when necessary and are not liable to be accidentally displaced. Should they become soiled, they may be cleansed with a damp cloth without injury to the label, thus keeping them always clean and legible and reducing the liability to mistakes in dispensing the contents of the bottles and also producing a neat and clean appearance either in a physicians case or upon the shelves.
It will be understood that I do not Wish to limit myself to the precise details oi' construction or the exact form of the device as herein shown and described, as many slight r'nodiiications might be made therein without den parting from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages oi' the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a device of the character described a resilient backing-strip having its edges turned over a label, and a transparent strip for covering said label held Ibeneath the overturned edges of said backing-strip, said coveringstrip being longer than said label and having its ends held closely against said backing-strip by the ends of the overturned edges thereof, the whole being bent to suitable form for retaining its position upon a bottle.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROSWELL H. TRUMPOUR.
Witnesses:
