TAG HOLDER..

NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES EDVIN STOWE, OF MOADENSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
TAG-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent. No. 506,802, dated. October 17, 1893.
Application filed December 14., 1892. Serial No. 455,185. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWIN STOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Adensville,in the county of Gaston and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Combination Tag-Holder and Clip, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined record tag holders and clips, and the object of the same is to provide means for keeping tally of the number of yards of goods in a roll or bolt of cloth or analogous material, together with the number of yards sold from time to time, and the cost and selling prices, and also to hold the goods and prevent the same from unwinding from the bolt or roll accidentally.
With this object in view, theinvention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a bolt or roll of material, showing the improved device applied in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, taken through the center thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the device detached. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the device shown made in concave-convex form to adapt the same to be applied to ribbon rolls and analogous arrangements. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts in the'several gures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the back or main support of the combined holder and clip, which is preferably made of metal and may be either of flat or curved form, as shown, with the bottom and side edges bent over to form guides and retaining-t1anges 2, and at the upper end is constructed an integral extension or tongue 3, that is bent downward adjacent to the rear portion of the said back or main support, and is so curved or bent as to be readily inserted between the folds of the roll or bolt; and when so inserted, the resiliency existing in the tongue will cause the folds of the material to be firmly held -between the tongue and the back or main support which extends over and on the outside of the roll or bolt, thus forming a clip which holds the folds of the material comprising the roll or bolt irlnl y together and thereby prevents accidental un winding.
Betweeen the upper end of the back or main supportl and the beginningofthe tongue 3, where it starts in its backward bend, a shoulder 4 is formed bybending the material at this point outward entirely across the upper end of the said back or support. 'A card 5 is inserted in the guides and retainingflanges 2 and held against accidental removal from the back or main support 1 by having its upper edge contact with the shoulder 4, as set forth, andwhen said card is removed it is slightly lifted at its upper end when it can be readily drawn outward over the shoulder, it being seen that the upper portions of the retaining-anges or guides 2 on the sides are cut away, as at 6, to permit a ready insertion or withdrawal of the said card or tag 5. On this card or tag is suitably arranged a series of lines and spaces in which is designated the original quantity or number of yards in the roll or bolt, the name and quality of the goods, the cost and selling prices, and the number of yards sold from time to time, the latter being applied by the salesman, aud by which means the exact quantity in the bolt or roll may at all times be ascertained with accuracy.
By the form of device shown in Fig. 4, it may be applied to ribbon rolls or other curved surfaces with facility and be used for holding the end of the ribbon, and thereby avoid the use of any other retaining means. It will be understood that the device may be suitably ornamented and constructed of any pre- Y ferred material applicable for the purpose.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is* As an improved article of manufacture, a`
combined tag holder and clip, consisting of a back or main support with the edges turned over to form guides or retaining-flanges, a
IOO
Io bent or curved in such manner as to form a secure friotional fastening when the device is applied, substantially as described.
In testimony that. 1 claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto axed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES EDWIN STOWE.
