' REMOVABLE PROTECTOR FOR HANDLES OF TELEPHONE HANDSETS Filed 001:. 4, 1948 Blow INVENTOR ATTORNEYS v Patented Nov. 13, 1951 REMOVABLE PROTECTOR FOR HANDLES OF TELEPHONE HANDSETS Leo B. Long, Olympia, Wash.
Application October 4, 1948, Serial No. 52,687
1 Claim. I
This invention relates to a protector designed for use in connection with the handles of French phones, wherein the transmitter and receiver are connected by a single handle, which is gripped by the operator in using the telephone.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a protector of this character which may be readily and easily spread open to permit of its ready attachment to the handle of a telephone, the resiliency of the material used in the construction of the protector being sufiicient to clamp the protector in position against displacement.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which while acting as a protector to protect the handle against germs and foreign matter, the protector will at the same time aiford means for listing important telephone numbers for ready access thereto.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of this character which may be i manufactured for such a nominal sum that it may be presented gratis to telephone users, the protector having certain advertising matter thereon which will be clearly visible at all times.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing;
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the transmitter and receiver of a French phone equipped with a guard or protector, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the protector illustrating the open portion thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the protector comprises a body portion indicated generally by the reference character 5, the body portion being formed of suitable material such as plastic or the like, which can be readily molded into the desired shape, the body portion having curved side walls 6 terminating in inwardly extended longitudinal flanges 1 formed along the open side of the body portion, the flanges 1 being spaced apart so that the device may be spread open and fitted over the handle of the phone,
' which in the present showing is indicated at A.
The flanges provide spaces where certain important numbers may be placed so that a person will have ready access thereto in case of an emergency.
The outer surface of the body portion may be provided with spaced lines indicating columns in which certain printed matter may be placed for advertising purposes or for listing certain important telephone numbers.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the body portion is so constructed that it will extend over substantially the entire outer surface of the handle of the telephone with which it is used, protecting the telephone handle and at the same time providing a protector which may be readily removed and thoroughly cleaned or disinfected and readily snapped in position without the necessity of using clamps, screws, bolts or other securing means.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed is:
The combination with the handle of a telephone combined receiver and mouthpiece having a rounded surface and a flat surface, of a protector comprising an elongated substantially tubular body constructed of yieldable material having one of its sides open for positioning around a telephone handle, an inwardly extended flange formed along each longitudinal edge of the open side of the body the free edges of the protector being spaced apart, said flanges adapted to rest flat against the flat surface of said telephone handle gripping the telephone handle, removably securing the protector to the handle, and the ends of the protector terminating in spaced relation with the receiver and mouthpiece of the handle.
