Be it known that I, MORTON JUDD, of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented, made, and applied to use a. eertain'new and useful Improvement in Fasteners or Buttons; and I do'hereby declare thel following to be a. full, clear, I.ind exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making port of this specification, wherein-w Figure 1 is a. plan'of the said fastener.

In buttons for closets, doors, 85e., 'the strain has Vusuellybeen taken by the screw that is madense of in attaching the same to the wood-work. This screw is frequently loosened and bent by strain upon the button', particularly when the strain comes endwise of the button or' fastener, as in window-fastenersandsash-supporting buttons. 4. l f

The nature of mysud invention' consists in a. socket, containingl thefscrcw or axis of the button, and formed with on exteior'ange, to take the surface of the wood, (the socket being let into the wood,) and with a rim, entering a circular cavity in thebutton, whereby' the strain is vrelieved from thenxs of tho` butto'n, and

taken -upon the rim of the socket, that, in its turn, is supported by the wood-work, into which it is eountersunk. In order to prevent the button turning too easily, I apply a helical friction-spring in a cavity in the said socket.

The helical 4spring a' is introduced in a 4cavity in the socket b, to produce the friction that is required to pre- In man'y'situatins the button .is only required` to work on one side of the axis. In that ense, the platef makes a seeurennd ornamental support to the button, and the angles thereof, atg and IL, prevent the button being turned beyond a right-angle, either way, to the position shown in iig. 1.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

V1. The socket b, with the ange 'Z and rim 0, in combination with the fastener or button a., having a circular recess setting over the rim o, as and for-the purposes'set forth.

2. The helical spring ze, in a cavity in the socket b, in combination with the button a-end rim o, as and for the purposes set forth. l v
