Description
MERWIN FOWLER., OF WOLGOTTVILLE, CGNNEGTIGUT.
Letters Patent No. 74,335, dated February 11,1868.A
IMPROVEMENT IN DIES POE.- CLOSING BUCKLES.
. titte Sdghule nfsmt it it their Elettra ntett mit mating ont uf tige tanti.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Be it known that I, MERWIN FOWLEB, of Wolcottville, in the/county of Litchfield, and Stateiof Connecticut, have invented a. new Improvement in :Dies f or Closing Buckles; and AI do herebydeclare the following, when taken in connection wilt-h the accompanying drawings, andthe letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the sume, and which said drawings constitute part of this specicatiozi, and represent, in- Y i A Figure 1, e. perspective view of the buckle for the manufacture of which thedies'are designed. Figures 2, 3, and 4, the three parts of the buckle detached. Figure 5, aperspectve view'of the upper part of the die inverted. Figure 6, 'a perspective view of the lower `part of the die, and in Figure 'i a. top view ofthe lower part of the die, with the buckle laid thereon, as when completed.
This invention relates to an improvement in the manner of closingaiucltle, composed of three parts, the i loop A, tongue B, and frame (Land thepeculiar buckle,for which these are designed was patented in`1862.
The frame C is first prepared, with its two ends flattened, and partially turned up, as seen in tig. 4; the tongue B from a. single piece of wire, cach end pointed, as seen in fig. 3; and the bow, A, a. snglestraigllt loop,
.as seen in fig. 2r lhe tongue is laid between the two lends of the frame, then theloop laid into both, und the bend of the tongue and the two ends of the frame are turned over one side of the'loop, asseen in tige-1.
Heretotore it'has required two, operations to close the parts. My invention,whe'r'eby the same work is perf formed lby one operation, consists 'n the peculiar construction ofthe dies, upon the lower part of which'the three parts of th'ebuckle 'are placed, and the upper part corresponding is folded down upon and so as to close r the several parts together.
To enable others to construct my improvement, I will proceed .to describe the saine, as illustrated inthe .accompanying drawings.
`The lower part, D, of the die, has alprojection upon its upper surface corresponding to .the form 'of the frame C, also,` aprojection, E, around which theloop is set, as lseen in fig. 7, and so that the loop will lie into the two ends of the frame.. Two recesses, a, nre formed in the frame projection, to lreceive the two points of the tongue, the bent portion of the tongue lying against the front of the projection E, and two recesses, d,
through the projection E, receive the two ends' of the fratrie, when laid thereon. The upper face of part F of the die, 'as seen in fig. 5, hns two projections, f, corresponding to the two recesses a, and so as to give form to the tongues, as seen in fig. 1. Two other projections, h, correspond to the recesses d, and enter the said recesses, so as to strike the turned-up end of the frame, and turn the ends down over the loop, as seen in iig. 7; and the -fo'rmerg g, on the-upper part, F', (as seen in fig. 5,) as the dies 'come together, strikes the bent-up'po'rton of the tongue, and turns that down-upon the loop, as seen in iig. 7. Thus the three blank pnrts, placed upon the lower die, and the upper die 'forced down thereon, closes the three parts, and completes the buckle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The dies, constructed as herein described, for closing a three-part buckle,.in the manner as set forth.
- MERWIN FOWLER.
