Be it known that I, SAMUEL I'I. CAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michi- 5 gan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention has reference to skirts so constructed that the Waist size thereof vmay be varied at the will of the wearer; Yand the invention consists in the novel and simple construction of the ad j usting ymeans and the peculiar arrangement and combination of the various parts thereof, as fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings illustrating my invention, Figure l is a perspective View of the top portion of a skirt with my adjusting' means ap- 20 plied thereto. Fig. 2 is a. sectional perspective view of a portion of the Waist-section. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, and Fig'. -flis a section taken on line a; a: of Iiig. 3.

The reference-letterA designates the skirt proper or body, the Waist-section of which is provided With a band B, extending' about the top of the skirt in the usual manner.

C is the usual placket-opening, and E and F, respectively, are straps attached to the 3o Waist-section of the skirt upon opposite sides of and at points remote from the placket, as shown. Preferably I have shown the straps referred to as formed by a continuation of the waistband B, the band proper in this instance terminating at each side of the skirt at a considerable distance from each edge of the placket, leaving the sections cl, and b of the skirt-body free or unprovided with a band, so as to fold readily when theA adjustment is 4o effected. The straps described are also tubular in construction for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

A securing device G is employed, detachably connecting the rear meeting portions of the skirt, consisting in this case of a buckle comprising detachable sections H and I, carrying, respectively, the hook e and an eye (l. The buckle-sections may be attached to the skirt in any manner, preferably seWed, as 5o shown, and each section is slotted, as at e and f, to form cross-bars g. The straps previously referred to pass through the slots in the buckle-sections in the manner indicated in Fig. 3, being held against movement in one direction, but free to pass through the buckle sections when drawn in the opposite direction.

Each string is secured at one end to the Waist-section at a point 7L between the placket and the point of attachment of the strap, While the opposite end is ad justably connected to they buckle-section. Preferably I have shown the draw-strings as extending through eyes if, formed in the Waistband into and projecting through and beyond the tubular straps.

The skirt being fastened in the usual manner at the back by engaging the buckle-sections, the waist size may be decreased by drawing upon the ends of the straps. After effecting the adjustment in this manner a fold (indicated by the reference-letter L) is formed in the skirt adj oining the placket, and this is' held tightly and smoothly against the waistband by means of the draw-string. It Will be apparent from the construction of the skirt as set forth that the adjustment maybe very readily and quickly effected after the skirt is fastened and that by the use of the draw-strings described the folds formed in the skirt are held smoothly in place, so that there Will be no bulging or unsightly enlargements produced around the Waist or hips.

Vhat I claim as my invention is* l. An adjustable skirt cut to admit of a fold being formed on either side of the placket,

a securing device detachably connecting the rear meeting portions of the skirt, adjusting devices adapted to produce and maintain folds in the Waist-section on the side of the placket and .means independent of the foldproducing devices arranged to overlie and hold the folds to the waistband.

In a skirt provided with a placket, the combination With a securing device detachably connecting the rear meeting portions of the skirt at the placket, straps secured to the Waist-section upon opposite sides of and at points remote from the placket and having adj ustable connections with the securing device, and draw-strings accompanying the straps, each looped through the Waist-section With its endssecured respectively to said section and adju stably connected to the securing device. 4. A skirt provided with a placket, a sectional buckle detachably .connecting the meeting portions of the skirt at the placket, straps secured to the Waist-section upon opposite sides of and at points remote from the placket and having adjustable connections with the buckle-sections, and draw-strings accompanying the straps, each looped through the Waist-section with its ends secured respectively to said section and adjustably connected to the buckle-sections.y

5. A skirt provided with a placket, a secof and at points remote from the placket and having adjustable connections With the buckle-sections, and draw-strings secured at one end to the inner side of the Waist-sections and having their free ends looped through said Waist-section and said hollou1 straps.

A skirt pro vided With a placket, a securing device detachably connecting the meeting portions of the skirt, hollow straps secured to the Waist-section upon opposite sides of and at points remote from the placket and having their free ends adjustably connected with the securing device, and draw-strings secured in said hollouT straps, the inner ends of said draw-strings being looped through and secured to the Waist-sections.
