Description

S. E. G. RAWS 0N Suspensory Bandage.
No 204,088. .Pateri'tedMay'ZI, 1 87.8.
" IT ESSES ATTORNEYS -PETERS. FHOTO-UTNDGRAPNESI, WASHINGTON?! C- .der-strap, I), which UNITED ir-minus PATENT OFFI oE,
SMITH E. G. RAIIVSON, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENSORY-BANDAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,088, dated May 21, 1878; application filed December 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SMITH E. G. RAWSON,
' Y of Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspensory-Bandages; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to suspensory-bandages; and it consists in connecting the front and rear straps of the bag with a shoulderstrap passing over either shoulder, the points of connection with said shoulder-strap being above the hips of the wearer, by which construction the use of awaist-belt or waist-band is entirely obviated, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I
In order to enable others skilledin the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referringtdthe annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side or half-front view of a man with my suspensory-bandage in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bandage. Fig. 3 is a rear view of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are detailed views of a part of the bandage.
A represents the bag of a suspensory-bandage constructed in any of the known and usual ways, and provided at the top with a band, B, extending a suitable distance on both sidisl, and having at each end two buckles, a an From the bottom of the bag A extend two straps, O G, which pass between the legs of the wearer, and their ends adjusted and fastened in the buckles b 12, near the ends of the strap B. In the buckles a a, at the ends of said strap B, are fastened the ends of a shoulmay pass over either the right or left shoulder, as desired. The various straps of the bandage are adjusted to such lengths that the points of connection on each side will be almost immediately above the hip.
waist-strap to contract, and
It will thus be seen that the bandage is entirely suspended from the shoulder, dispensing with the waist-belt or waist-band usually employed in this class of bandages.
Any or all of the straps may be made elastic, if desired.
It is evident that the buckles can be dispensed with, and, when the straps have been properly adjusted to the wearer, the ends of the straps sewed together.
By my invention there is no inconvenience to the wearer and no pressure around the waist.
It will thus be seen that with my improvement the back of the suspensory-bandage is held by straps front and rear, forming a junction about the hips of the wearer, and suspended over either the right or left shoulder by a strap, which may be changed, at the option of the wearer, from the'right to the left shoulder, and vice versa, leaving the back and supporting straps precisely in the same position, irrespective of whichever shoulder the shoulder-strap is worn.
The shoulder-strap D may, if preferred, be passed back of the neck, and still allow the sack and. lower straps to be in proper position, as before stated.
This shoulder-strap D may be duplicated, similar to a pair of suspenders, if desired 5 but I find the single strap all that is necessary for the purposes.
It is well known that in using that class of suspensory-bandages which are supported by a strap around the waist, they cannot well be worn at night, owing to the tendency of the be not only disagreeable but unhealthy to the wearer. By my constructionof bandage this difficulty is entirely overcome, and the bandage can be worn at night as well as during the day.
Having thus fully described. my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a suspensory-bandage, the combination of the back or under straps O O, adjustably connected to the sack-supporting strap at a. point above the hips of the wearer, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the bag A, of the In testimony that I claim the foregoing I strap B,extending a suitable distance each have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of side of the same, the under straps O O, and. December, 1877. the sh0u1der-strapD,forn1ing a junction with S. E. G. RAWSON. the sack-supporting strap at a point above the Witnesses: hips of the wearer, substantially as and for FRANK GALT, the purposes herein set forth. J. J. MCCARTHY.
