FRANZ S. BOEDEFELD, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO WILLIAM L. SPENCER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
WAIST-FORM ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,273, dated May 5, 1903. Application filed July 28, 1902. Serial NO- 117,249. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Beit known that LFRAN S. BOEDEFELD, a citizen of the UnitediStates, residing in the city and county of .San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Waist-Formers; and Ihereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in garment-supporting devices, and particularly to that type adapted to be attached to a corset for the purpose of holding the Waist in proper position. he object is to provide a simple adjustable waist holder or former that can be quickly attached to or detached from the corset after the latter has been fastened and which will not become readily released therefrom accidentally.
It comprises the parts and details to be hereinafter described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows plan View of waist-former with single main slot and single buttonhole. Fig. 2 shows plan View with two main slots and two buttonholes. Fig. 3 shows side view of both designs. Fig. 4 shows the application of the device.
Arepresents a flexible plate of metal or other suitable material-having one end provided with the lateral extensions 2, in which are the slots 3, disposed at an incline to theaxis of the plate and converging toward the upper end of the latter. This slotted end of the plate terminates in a hook portion 4. The plate is provided alongits shank portion with means for adj ustably engaging the fastening devices of a corset.
In Fig. 1 I have shown the plate'with a perforation 5 at the upperend through which the head of a corset-hook may pass. From the enlarged 'openin g 5 extends a slot linearly the length of the plate and'to'one side of the center, which will only allow of the free passage of the shank of the corset-hook. At suitable intervals along this main passage-way 6 are branch slots or notches 7, each having a short vertical portion in which the corsethook is securely engaged. The latter once in place in a notch can only be removed by a lateral and vertical movement of the plate to bring the head of the hook into perforation 5. The branch slots 7 maybe angular or curved.
If desired,- the .plate may be slotted, as in Fig. 2, wherein are shown two perforations '5, one at either end of the plate, for the insertion of the head of the corset-hook and a main slot 6, extending from each perforation toward the center of the plate, but the two slots not uniting. From the slots 6 extend the lateral slots'or pockets 7 Where the plate A is" likely to be bent very 'much, the construction last above described is preferable for the reason that with the bond 6 5 coming in the middle of the plate, as it usually will, it may prove objectionable to have a thin portion of the plate, such as is formed between the longer slot and one of the pockets, projecting hook fashion. By leaving a small central solid; portion of the plate, as in V Fig. 2, this difficulty is obviated.
In operation, as inFig. 4c, the corset is fastened, as usual, either under or over the skirts. The plate A is engaged on the lowest corsethook in the notch that will give the desired waist length. A tape passed through slots 3 is then secured around the waist, and the waistbands are engaged by the hook 4. The device is thus easily adjusted outside of the corset and firmly secured without the aid of pins, hooks,'buttons, or sewing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patwent, is
1. A waist-former comprising a platehaving a longitudinal slot adapted to receive a corset-hook or the like, and having lateral pockets connecting with said longitudinal slot, and means. for engaging the garment to beheld. I
2. A waist-former comprising a longitudinally-slotted plate provided witnmeans at one end for engaging the waistband, said plate having lateral extensions. adjacent to 5 the end having said means, said extensions having slots converging toward each other and adapted to receive a tape or belt, and said plate having lateral notches connecting with said longitudinal slot in which a corset- 10o hook or the like may be engaged.
3. A waist-former comprising a longitudinally-slotted plate having means at one end for engaging a waistband, said plate having the slot enlarged at one end to receive the head of a eorset-h00k or the like, and having lateral branch slots opening into said longi-v tudinal slot.
4. A waist-former comprising a plate having means at one end for engaging a Waistband and provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots disposed substantially in line,
said slots separated at their adjacent ends,
an end of each of said slots .enlarged to receive the head of a corset-hook or the like, said plate having lateral slots communicating with said longitudinal slots.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANZ S. BOEDEFELD.
