PATENT GARMENT- FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,813, dated October 6, 1903'.
Application filed May 20, 1902.
-shaping means by which to give the longwaisted eliect sought in shirt-waists at the present time; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a device as in use and exposed to view. Fig. 2 is a View showing the device applied, the major portion thereof covered by the skirt, a belt being adjusted ready for application to cover the hook of the improved device.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 4: is a detailed sectional view through the hook and its shank with the elastic applied, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the hook-plate.
Our device, as shown, comprises the hook A, the longitudinal elastic strap B, and the hook O, the latter having the longitudinal slot 0, enlarged centrally to' allow it to pass over the corset-stud and by being pulled upwardly by the elastic strap to engage the usual head of the stud, the strap being socured at its lower end to the loop 0 and adjustably connected at its upper end with the shank D of the hook A, preferably by providing said shank with two transversely-extending slots D and D The upper one, D, has its lower wall or edge serrated, as shown, the-strap being applied as best shown in the detail sectional view, Fig. 4. It will be noticed that the strap can be adjusted to any desired length and when in use will be held firmly in place. In securing the strap to the clasp it is passed from the frontthrough the upper slot D, then brought down along the rear side to front through the curved slot D lapping over a short distance in front of the hook-plate,between the same and the depending portion of the strap, the strap engaging Serial No.108i208. (No model.)
with the tooth in the lower edge of the slot D, as best shown in Fig. 4. From thisit is evident that the strap B is adjusted from the plate, which is accessible, and not from the loop 0, so that the garment-fastener is easily adjusted when in position on the wearer.
At its upper end the hook A is divided into two sections E E, which are returned over the outer side of the plate and form separate hooks to engage over the shirt-waist string and also over the band of the skirt, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2, Fig. 1 showing the shirtwaist string secured by the hooks or tongues E, and Fig. 2 showing the said hooks or tongues caught over the band of the skirt in position to be covered by the belt when the latter is applied. It will be noticed that the tongues E diverge from their lower inner ends toward their upper outer ends, thereby forming a downwardly-tapering hook-fastening for the shirt-waist string and for the skirt, extending approximately from the longitudinal center of the device, so that the said string and skirt will be pulled down in the front to a point, the'degree of V or dip thereby given to the waist deflecting the shirt-waist string or waistband being regulated by the adjustment of the strap, which being elastic maintains the dip while allowing movement of the wearer.
In practice the longitudinal slot 0' of the clasp O is placed over a convenient (preferably the lowermost) fastening-stud of the corset, and'the hooks or tongues E are caught over theshirt-waist string and the skirtband, and the tension of the strap B, together with the location of the point of convergence A in line with the slot C, will draw such parts firmly down and hold them in position to produce thelong-waisted effect orV-shaped effect desired at the front of the shirt-waist. The strap may be readily adjusted in connection with the hook A to increase or otherwise vary the tension upon the shirt-waist string and the skirt-band.
The device is simple, can be readily applied for use, canbe easily adjusted, and will be found efiicient for the purpose for which it is designed.
We claim 1. In a waist-shaping device, comprising a plate provided at its upper edge with depending tongues and a plurality of transverse slots located below said tongues, and an elastic and pendent strap having a garment-engaging device at its lower free end, its upper free end being doubled upon itself and passed through said slots so as to enable said free end to be adjustably secured at and to the said plate.
2. A waist-shaping device, comprising a plate provided atits upper edge with depending tongues and a plurality of transverse slots located below said tongues, and an elastic and pendent strap having a garment-engaging device at its lower free end, its upper free end being passed through the upper slot down the rear of the plate and through the lower slot to the front of the plate over which extends the pendent portion of the strap.
3. A Waist-shaping device, comprising a plate provided at its upperedge with depending tongues and a plurality of transverse slots located below said tongues the edges of one of said slots being toothed, and an elastic and pendent strap having a garment-engaging device at its lower free end, its upper free end being doubled upon itself and passed through said slots and engaging said toothed edge so as to enable said free end to be adjustably secured at and to the plate.
4. A waist-shaping device, comprising a plate provided at its upper edge with depending waistband-engaging means, a plurality of transverse slots located below said means, and a pendent strap having a garment-engaging device at its lower free end, its upper free end being doubled upon itself and passed through said slots so as to enable said free end to be adjustably secured at and to the said plate.
5. A waist-shaping device, comprising a plate provided atits upper edge with depending waistband-engaging means and a plurality of transverse slots located below said means, and a pendent strap having a garment-engaging device at its lower free end, its upper free end being passed through the upper slot down the rear of the plate and through the lower slot to the front of the plate over which extends the pendent portion of the strap.
