TRACE-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,061, dated May 5, 1903.

Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunbury, in the county of Gates and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Trace-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to traceholders particularly adapted for heavy draftharness; and the object of the present invention is to provide a trace-holder which will hold the traces in place and prevent them rubbing against the sides'of the horse; and another object is to provide a rein-guide in connection with the trace-holders whereby the holder is held in its proper position and the reins are also held in their proper relative position.

With these objects in view the invention consists, essentially, of a U -shaped bow having one or more outwardly-extending hooks adjacent to the upper ends of the bow and rings arranged at the upper ends of the bow.

The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of a trace-holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is an edge View of the same, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional View on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. V

In constructing a holder in accordance with my invention I emply a bow-A, preferably of wood, which is bent in the form of a U and is of such size as to fit beneath the horse directly back of the shoulders, andin order to provide trace-holders for different-sized horses it is of course obvious that difierent sizes of bows will be employed. In order to to make the bow sufficiently rigid, I attach a metallic strip B to the outer face thereof, and in practice I prefer to turn the protruding ends of the said strap back upon itself, providing eyes 0 at the upper end of the bow at each side.

A series of outwardly-projecting hooks is attached to the bow adjacent to each end, the ends of said hooks being turned downwardly. As before stated, the bow is adapted to be arranged beneath the horse, and the reins E are passed through the eyes 0, while the traces F are brought into engagement with the hooks D, said traces being usually constructed of chain; but in case they are made of leather suitable perforations will be provided to receive the hooks. It will thus be seen that the traces will be held away from the sides of the horse, thereby preventing rubbing the sides, and the trace-holder also provides a convenient form of rein-guide.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A trace-holder comprising a bow having eyes at its ends through which the reins are adapted to be passed and hooks adjacent the .eyes adapted for engagement with the traces,

substantially as described.

- 2. A trace-holder consisting of a U -shaped bow having eyes at its ends and laterally-projecting hooks arranged adjacent to the ends, substantially as described.

3. A trace-holder consisting of a wooden bow, a metallic strip fastened thereto and ter- .minating in eyesat its ends, and hooks projecting' laterally from the strip, the ends of which are turned downwardly, substantially as described.
