BOX LOOP FOR BRIDLES.
No. 39,173. Patented Deo. 9, 1884.

LUTHER C.' VOORHEES, OF NEWv YORK, N. IY.
BOX-LOOP FOR BRIDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,173, dated December 9, 1884.
Application filed April 24, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUTHER C. VooRHEEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BoX-Loops for Bridles, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled iu the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is more espe cially to reduce the cost of construeti ng bridles for horses; and it consistsin the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forthand embodied in the clauses of the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like `parts in each of the figures, Figure l is a plan showing the several parts of the cheek piece and winker sewed together' prior to forming the box-loop. Fig. 2 is a section through line x, and Fig. 3 is a section through line 3,1. Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views showing the arrangements of parts when the device is complete.
In said drawings, a is the winter, formed with the usual stiffening-plate vand projecting laterally from the cheek-strap to cover the animals eyes. Z) is the said check, and c is a loop-piece laid over said winkel.' in a position such as to allow, when the parts are sewed together, free edges g to be bem` over to form the loop, as shown in Fig. l. Billets orlevelingpieces c are placed at the sides ofthe winker, as shown in Fig. 2, to provide a uniform sur face for the box-loop. Lines of stitching ff are then sewed through the parts a b c c, securing said parts together, but lleaving free edges g g, adapted to be bent to overlap one another as in Figs. 4 and 5, and to be secured together to forni a loop. Said edges are reciprocally skivcd, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and
(No model.)
5, so that when taken together they form a thickness of leather equal to the rest of the loop. rlhe overlapping edges :are then cemented together with a waterproof cement and placed in a die and there firmly united. After this the loop is dampened and placed in suitable dies, and thus pressed into shape for the market. The overlapping edges may, to secure greater permanence, be tacked together, as in Fig. 5, the points of the tacks being clinched in such a manner as to be corr cealed. I may also, should I desire so to do, arrange a strengthening plate or strip, 71, be tween the rows ff of stitching, as in Fig. 4, to give greater stiffness to the loop.
I am aware that it is not new to form a boxloop ofa piece, the edges of which :are cemented together, and I do not claim the same herein.
Having thus deseribedthe invention, what I claim as new isl. In a bridle, the box-loop, the winker,
and the cheek-strap sewed together by lines ot stitching ff, and a plate h, arranged between said lines of stitching, substantially as set forth.
2. In a bridle, the combination of the cheekstrap, the winker laid thereon, and loop-piece c, having the edges g g cemented together, and the rows of stitching ff passingl from the inner corners ofthe loop through the winker and cheek-piece and securing` said parts together,
.all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a bridle, the combination of the cheekstrap the winker a, the leveling-pieces c, and the loop-piece c, said parts being united by the rows of stitchesff, and said looppiece having free edges g g, adapted to be secured together to form a loop, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of `April, 1884-.
LUTHER C. VOORHEES. Vitnesses:
CHARLES H. IELL, F. F. CAMPBELL.
