SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 719,269, dated January 27, 1903.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. SLYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Cover Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to umbrellas, and more particularly to a device for fastening the cover [0 to the supporting-ribs.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient fastening that may be formed in a single piece, can be easily attached, will grasp and hold the cover without puncturing the fabric, and when in position-will be wholly under the cover and free of the drippings from said cover.
My invention consists of the constructions and combinations hereinafter described, and
set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an umbrella employing my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of my fastener. Fig. 4 is a detail of the fastener in position on the rib with the cover shown in section. Fig. 5 shows the fastening attached to the cover in its first position above the cover when it is turned around as shown by the arrow and dotted line to its position under the cover, and Fig. 6 is a detail of an auxiliary clamp that may be used.

In the drawings, (t represents the cover, I) the supporting-rib for the cover, and o my fastening device, which is preferably made of a single piece of sheet metal formed into a hollow portion 0, having the open end 0 to receive the end of the rib b, and, further, havingalongitudinal opening 0 forming a clamp to engage a welt of the scam in the umbrellacover.
I form the outer end of the fastening preferably by turning the metal sheet across the line of the rib-receiving portion, as shown at 0 to form a stop for the outer end of the rib, and then turning the sheet in a curve to form a clamp 0 extending transversely to the ribreceiving portion to engage the cover, the edges of the metal sheet being preferably turned back, as shown at 0 to strenghthen the clamp.
To attach the fastening, the edge of the cover is preferably folded and caught in the clamp 0 with the fastening extending over the cover, as shown in Fig. 5, and it is then turned around, as indicated by the arrow and dottedline in said figure, until it is in position under the cover, thereby tightening the cover in the clamp, the rib being inserted in the hollow portion as it is being turned into position, and both the rib and fastening come into position together under the cover, when the welt of the seam of the cover may be clamped by the hollow portion 0' through the opening 0 It will be seen that I have provided a simple, strong, and efficient fastener that will engage both the cover and welt of the seam and one that is easily attached to a plain end of the supporting-rib.
ltis sometimes desirable, especially in large umbrellas, to secure the cover at a point removed from the ends of the ribs, and for this purpose I provide an auxiliary clamp d, preferably made of a single metallic sheet in tnbular form, through which the supportingribs pass, and having the clamping-jaws d to engage the welt of the seam.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination with the cover and supporting-rib for said cover, of a fastener having a hollow portion to receive said rib, and a clamp extending transversely to said hollow portion in the path of said rib to form a stop for said rib and to engage said cover along its outer edge, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with the cover and sup- 9o porting-rib for said. cover, of a fastener having two clamping portions extending at right angles to each other, one of which is adapted to engage the welt of a scam in said cover and to receive the end of said rib and the other to 5 engage the outer edge of said cover and form a stop for the end of said rib, substantially as In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of June, A.
