SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,100, dated February 4, 1896.

Be it known that 1, WI LIAM W. WHITA- KER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glove-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to 'a fastener for gloves-that is, a device'for locking together the two edges of the slit or opening left in the wrist of a glove for the purpose of easily inserting or withdrawing the hand.
The object of the invention is to provide a fastener which can be rapidly and cheaply made, which can be readily applied to the glove, which can be easily used for fastening the two edges of the opening, which will avoid the tearing of the glove material and act to reinforce the edges, and avoid the disadvantages which have been incident to each of the fastening devices of the earlier sorts that are known to me.

upon the other, and being provided with a reinforcing-strip b that is stitched at b 19 My improved fastener is intended to hold together the two edges 1) Z), and is made and applied as follows: It is formed of two principal members. One of these is indicated by C and the other by D.
The part or member C is formed by cutting or stamping from a sheet of metal a thin plate having the two parts 0 0', each preferably oval, more or less, in outline, and connected together bya neck 0 Each is formed with an elongated oval aperture 0 which apertures can also be produced at the time the plate is cut or stamped from the sheet or strip. To apply this part 0 the neck 0 is bent so as to bring the parts 0 c substantially parallel and then they are slipped one over and one under the edge I) of the slit B and pressed against the leather, the latter also having an aperture adapted to coincide with those at 0 c is an eyelet, either tubular in shape or formed of a bent piece of sheet metal. It is passed through the apertures 0 and then, by a pressing action, its edges are forced outward over the edges of the apertures 0 the eifect being to thereby provide a tight and perfect binder for holding this member 0 to the glove, and at the same time accomplish it in such a way as to insure a neat and tasty finish,'no rivets or similar devices being required.
The eyelet 0 serves another important purpose in that it provides a strong and durable Wearing surface for the button or stud to be described, and prevents abrasion on the cut edges of the plates 0 0.
The other member,D, of the fastener is made as follows It has a base formed with the plates d cl, also cut or stamped from a strip or sheet of metal, and a neck (1 Each part d d has a relatively small aperture (1 and the plate (1 is stamped to form two or more tangs or points d". To apply this part to the glove, the neck (1 is bent, and the plates cl cl are applied one to the outside and the other to the inside of the edge 1) and pressed tightly upon it, the result being to compress the leatherbetween them and to force into it the tangs or points (1". The latter prevent any slipping or oscillation of the plates, and they are held firmly in place.
The button or stud D is formed with a relatively thin stem or shank (Z the thicker neck (Z and the elongated or elliptical head (1 At the center transversely this head al is of substantially the same thickness as the neck (1, but its ends project beyond the latter, and are preferably slightly rounded or beveled on their under sides. The plan outline of the head (Z is of dimensions slightly less than those of the aperture in the member C, so that it can pass freely through the latter when parallel therewith; but when the button is turned so that its length is transverse to the elliptical aperture in the part C it is prevented from escaping. The manner of using the fastener after it has been applied will be readily un derstood.
To connect the two members it is merely necessary to turn the button D with its head parallel to the slit B, then draw the edge Z) of the glove over and permit the button to pass through the part (J and then turn it a quarter-way round, after which the edges 1) Z) will be held tightly together until the button is turned parallel with the aperture in the part 0.
As the aperture or buttonhole is elliptical or elongated, there might be a tendency for one of the edges Z) Z) to slip longitudinally on the other, unless provision were made to prevent it. I avoid it by having the neck part d." of substantially the same diameter in one direction as the larger part of the buttonhole at its center-that is to say, this neck is also approximately elliptical or oval in cross-seetion, its longer dimension being parallel with he longer one of the head (1 Consequently it permits joining and separating the parts O and D with the utmost freedom, but fits tightly against the sides of the buttonhole when the button is turned transversely to the aperture.
lVhat I claim is- 1. A glove-fastener, having the member 0 formed of the inner and outer plates 0 c, stamped from a single sheet of metal and each having an elongated buttonhole formed therein, and the flanged eyelet 0 extending through said buttonholes in the plates 0 c, and the member D having a rotatable button with the elongated head, adapted to pass through the buttonholes in the member 0 when lying in line therewith, and the neck adapted to engage with the sides of the but tonhole when the elongated head is turned transversely thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. A glove-fastener having the members C and D, the member C being formed of a single plate of sheet metal having the parts 0 a lying on opposite sides of the glove and the neck 0 eXtendinga-cross the adjacent edge of the glove, said parts 0 0 being provided with elongated apertures, and the riveted eyelet 0 extending through such apertures and binding the parts 0 0 together, and the part D having the base formed of the plates (Z d integral together, and the button having the pivot-stem d, the elongated head, and the intermediate neck (1 adapted to contact with the sides of the buttonhole when the elongated head lies transverse to such holc, substantially as set forth.
3. The hereiudescribcd glove-fastener having in combination the members C and 1.), the member 0 being a metallic buttonhole with a plate inside and a plate outside the glove, formed from the same blank and integral with the inside plate, and a reinforcing-eyelet, extending through and connecting the said plates, and the member D having a rotatable button adapted to pass through the said metallic buttonhole, substantially as set forth.
