NITED TATES FRANK W. GARMELICH,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,123, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed October 4, 1900, Serial No. 31,993.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. CARMELICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Clips; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to umbrellas or parasols; and the prime objectof the invention is to provide means for easily and quickly Socuring the points of the cover to the outer ends of the' ribs to reduce to a minimum the liability of the cover pulling away from the ribs, which is so frequently the casein umbrellas now-in general use,in which the covers are stitched or tied to the ends of the ribs. This result is secured without detracting from the general appearace of the umbrella, but rather adding to the ornamental appearance and greatly increasing the life of the same.
With this object in View the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, which will hereinafter be set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a 'portion of an umbrella cover and rib, showing the mode of fastening the cover to said rib; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the fastener.
Referring to said drawings, 1 denotes the outer end of the umbrella-rib, provided with an eye 2.
3 denotes the cover, and lthe fastener. The fastener consists of two strips of ductile metal, each of which is bent upon itself to form clamping-jaws, which are adapted to em brace the edge of the umbrella-cover at its point, and which have, preferably, punched therefrom projections, which embed themselves in the cover and more securely hold the fastening in position. Each section of the fastening is provided with an eye, which is engaged by a hook at the end of a curved link (No model.)
5, which passes through the eye of the rib. Thus connected it will be impossible for the cover to become accidentally disengaged from the rib, which is so commonly the case where the cover is fastened to the rib by a thread, and the life of the umbrella is materially increased.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
. the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
The device is exceedingly useful for the purpose for which it is designed and maybe placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. An umbrella-clip for the purpose described comprising two clamping-jaws adapted to fasten to the edge of the umbrella-covering, and a link adapted to be fastened to the umbrella-rib and. loosely connected to the ends of the jaws, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a cover and a rib provided with an eye, of a fastening consisting of two strips bent upon themselves to form clamping-jaws to engage the edge of the umbrella-covering, and a link passing through the eye of the rib and connected to the inner or adjacent ends of the strips, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK w. oARMELIoH.
