MARIE JOSEPH AUGUSTIN DEYDIER, OF NYONS, FRANCE.
METAL CASING FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 718,827, dated January 20, 1903. Application filed February 24, 1902. Serial No. 95,837. (No model.)
To a, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIE JOSEPH AUGUS- TIN DEYDIER,a citizen of the French Republic,
and a resident of Nyons, Drdme, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Casings for Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a metal casing for books, and is adapted to be fastened to the ordinary bindings of the latter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a casing embodying my invention applied to a book; Fig. 2, an edge elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 a section through one leaf of the casing on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1."'
The casing A is cut out of a thin sheet of metal to the exact measurements of the book to be protected. It comprises three portions viz., the back a and two covers a co -held together by means of hinges a which are almost invisible. The free edges a of the sheets of metal are turned inwardly to protect the edges of the book-covers proper. The cover is completely finished before being placed upon the book and is held thereto by means of metal fasteners B, having claws b easily bent and which pass the metal casing and the ordinary binding 0, perforated at the outer corner for that purpose. The head of the fasteners is almost flush with the surface of the casing and can form part of the ornamentation of the said casing. The claws of the fasteners bent open upon the inside of the cover are hidden by means of easily-disruptible material, such as paper 0, gummed to the inside of the book for that purpose and which can be readily moistened and. removed or scraped 0E when it is desired to detach the casing or replace it by another. This metal casing may be ornamented in relief or'otherwise in any desired manner or color. Relief decorations made from thin sheets of metal are liable to be dented. The hollow in the under s ide of the casing is therefore filled with paper-pulp (1. Sheets of aluminium, with a mixture of pewter or copper, being very light are preferable wherewith to make these casings.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the ordinary binding of a book, a metal casing formed in three parts hinged together and comprising a back and two covers, the free edges of which latter are bent inward to protect the edges of the ordinary covers, and easily-bendable fasteners confining said casing to the book-cover at the outer corners of the latter.
2. In combination with the ordinary binding of a book, havingsuitably-located perforations in the outer corners of the covers, a thin metal casing formed in three parts hinged together and comprising a back and two covers, the free edges of which latter are bent inward to protect the edges of the ordinary covers, metal fasteners having readily-bent claws which are passed through said metal covers and the perforations in the ordinaryv covers and then bent outward upon the inside of the ordinary cover, and disruptible material gummed to the latter over, and concealing, said claws.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARIE JOSEPH AUGUSTIN DEYDIER.
