To all whom it may concern: v

Be it known that I, HARRY I-I. JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Books, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to books, and the principal object of the same is to form the leaves and covers thereof of material to resist heat, so that in the event of a fire the books will not be destroyed.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of one of the leaves thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the improved books, showing the manner of protecting the edges of the leaves thereof.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the improved book is composed of the leaves 1 which are formed of an inner layer of specially prepared and woven sheet asbestos 2, said sheet 2 having its surfaces covered with thin layers of paper 3. The sheets of paper 3 are of sufficient thickness to permit printing thereon, but the ink will pass therethrough and mark the asbestos sheet in a corresponding manner, so that in the event of the leaves being in the presence of heat Specification of Letters Patent.

of suflicient intensity to consume the sheet 3, the records will be preserved on the asbestos sheet 2. The leaves 1 are bound in the covers 4 and 5, said covers being formed of an interior sheet of asbestos 6, an outer binding of thin leather 7, and an inner lining of thin paper 8. Said covers are provided with the front and side fiaps 9 and 10, the flaps of one cover overlapping the flaps of the other cover so that the edges of the leaves 1 are protected from fire. The flaps 9 and 10 are extensions of the covers 4 and 5.

It will be seen from the foregoing that this invention provides means whereby a loss of the records by burning isprevented. It will also be understood that the linings of the covers may be destroyed without affecting the asbestos portion thereof, and also that the paper surfaces of the leaves 1 may be destroyed without affecting the record that has passed through said surfaces and become recorded on the inner as bestos material.

What I claim as my invention is A book comprising leaves formed of an inner sheet of fireproof material and outer sheets of paper, covers for said leaves formed of inner fireproof material and outer bindings, and edge flaps carried by said cover adapted for overlapped engagement with one another to protect the edges of said leaves.
