Description
'MONROE F. DOBIEIN S, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
FACE-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1907.
A li ti fil d November 27, 1906. Serial No. 345,327.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONROE F. DOBBINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Face-Covers, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to a face cover or file especially adapted for use of bonding and insurance companies, and the objects of the invention is a face cover which can be handled without danger of so tearing or inutilating the paper that the matter printed or Written thereupon will become illegible.
It is the common practice for bonding and insurance companies to make out what is termed a face cover upon which is printed or partly printed and partly written the data concerning the case to which the cover belongs, and of securing by means of a paper fastener the application for the bond or for the insurance, and other papers relating the case to the face cover. The continual handling of these papers results in the tearing or niutilating of the face cover especially in its upper lefthand corner portion which rests against the head of the paper fastener, and which practically forms a backing for the application papers, references and other papers pertaining to the case. I remedy this objectionable feature of the presentform of construction by constructing the face cover with an integral extension which extension is folded upon itself and is then folded down upon the back of the sheet, thus producing upon the upper left-hand portion of the cover a three-fold thickness through which the paper fasteners pass.
In the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a plan view showing the reverse side of one of the face cover. Fig. 2 is a front face view showing the extension unfolded, in order to show the construction of the folded part. Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of a sheet of paper from which the face covers are cut, illustrating the manner of cutting two of such face covers from one sheet of paper. Fig. f is a section taken through the face cover illustrating a slight modification in construction. Fig. 5 is a sectional view illustrating a slight additional modification.
In these drawings A represents the reverse side of a face cover and this cover carries an extension A, which extension has one side edge which forms a continuation of the left-hand side of the face cover, and is joined to said cover along the upper edge of the left-hand portion of said cover. This extension which is rectangular in outline and is substantially of about one-half the width of the face cover is folded upon itself along the line A",
said line extending diagonally across the extension, and the extension is then folded back upon the rear side of the face cover, the line of this last fold being upon the line of the upper edge of the face cover, and is indicated in the drawings by the dotted line A This gives three thickness of papers upon the left-hand portion of the face cover through which is inserted an eyelet or other paper fastener, the fastener passing through suitable perforations 0, made with the usual paper punch. In Fig. 2 I have shown the extension as being unfolded after having been punched for the fastener. In order that there may be no waste of paper in manufacturing these face covers, I cut two of them from each sheet of paper as shown in Fig. 3, the full line F representing the cut, and when the sheet has been separated into two sheets by cutting along the line F, two face covers will be formed and each will be provided with an extension A ready for folding down.
Gum B, or other suitable adhesive material may be applied to the extensions A as shown in Fig. 3 in order to aid in holding said extensions in their folded position. In Fig. 4 I have shown a cross-section taken through a portion of one of the face covers with the extension A folded down upon it, and between the folds of the extension which form a pocket I insert a strip of linen or other fabric to further strengthen and reinforce this portion of the face cover. In Fig. 5 I have shown a similar sectional view and illustrated a cheaper form of reinforcing which consists in applying to the rear face of the extension when folded, down and to the front face of the face cover perforated disks E, the perforations of the disks alining with the openings or perforations O.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'.-
1. A face cover of the kind described comprising a rectangular extension carried by an upper portion of the cover, said extension being folded upon itself, and then folded down upon the back of the face cover.
'2. A device of the kind described comprising a face cover, a rectangular extension formed integral with said face cover, one side of said extension being a continuation of the left-hand side of the face cover, the said cover being folded diagonally upon itself, and then folded down upon the face cover. I
3. A device of the kind described comprising a face cover, an extension carried at the upper edge of said face cover, and upon the Iefthand side, said extension being folded diagonally upon itself, and then folded back upon the face cover, the said cover and folded extension being perforated and a reinforcing material carried by the extension and face cover.
4. A device of the kind described comprising a face cover, a rectangular extension forming an integral part of said'face cover, said extension being folded on a diagonal line, and on a line with the upper edge of the face cover, and pieces of fabric arranged respectively,' between the back of the face cover and one fold of the extension and between those portions of the extension which are folded upon themselves.
5. A device of the kind described comprising a face cover, a rectangular extension carried thereby, said ex-' tension being folded upon itself on a diagonal line, and 10 being folded over upon the back of the face cover, the folding of the extension upon itself forming the pocket and a piece of fabric held in said pocket, as and for the purpose set forth.
