Application filed mote-11, .1915. Serial n 55.275.
To all whom it mag concern; I i, i V I Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. NIVER, a
7 citizen of the United States of America, re,-.
siding in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Pamphlet-Covers, of which the following is atrue and exact olescription, reference being had to the accom-- panying drawings, which form a part thereof. j
The object of my present invention is. the production of a book such as a magazine, pamphlet, periodical, or the like presenting a good appearance,-in whichthe cover member attached to the body of thebook in a neat and efiective manner, serves not only the ordinary purpose of ,a-book cover, but also'in its original form as a wrapper for holding the book closed and in shape for transportation through the mails, or other wise, without the use of any other wrapper.
In carrying out my invention I form the cover of a single piece of material, usually flexible, with which I surround the front side, back side, front edge, and back or hinge edge of the book body, leaving only the top and bottom edges of the book exposed. I permanently secure the ends of the cover piece together and the cover piece to the book body at the hinge edge of the latter.
The cover thus formed when out apart at the front edge of the book forms a cover of the usual appearance in books of the character mentioned and may .have the usual printed matter on its inner and outer sides.
Before the cover piece is cut apart at the front edge of the book it forms an effective wrapper. By its use therefore a separate mailing wrapper is rendered unnecessary, a
matter of importance with a magazine for 1 instance, having a large circulation, where the separate mailing Wrappers for a single issue require many hundred pounds of paper.
The employment of my improved cover puts a check on the unauthorized use of the book inclosed by it, which is highly advantageous in some cases as with news companies which have frequently suffered losses in the past through the acts of unscrupulous agents in wrongfully renting magazines, etc., instead of selling them. Ordinarily in such cases the customer needs to make no examination of the contents of the magazine before purchasing since the title, date, char- 7 shown in Fig. 1 and Specification of Letters Patent. Patented'oh3o, 1917.
acter, etc, of the publication may all be shown, by the printed matter borneby the outer surface of the cover. o I vOfthedrawings, I y
Figure 1 is a perspective viewofamagas zine covered-in accordance with my invention in the form, issued by its publisher; FigpQ is a perspective view of a portion, of a magazine differing slightly from that V Fig. 3 is anelevation of thefront edge of the magazine shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the book body. The leaves are secured to-] gether at the hingeedge of the book: in any suitable manner asby staples 3, and are out oruncutat the opposite orfront edgeof the. bookas desired.
The cover of the book consists of a single, piece of. fiexiblesmaterial such as paper which is usually of heavier stockthan the leaves forming the body of the book and of a width equal to the length of the leaves as shown in Fig. 1, or slightly longer as shown in Fig. 2. The cover piece comprises a back side portion 4, a front edge portion 5, a front side portion 6, a back or hinge edge portion 7, and a narrow portion 8 which is overlapped by the adjacent end of the back side portion 4. p
In assembling the cover, the back edge portion 7 of the cover is permanently se part 4 are also permanently secured together. The securing means in each case may be paste or glue. To facilitate assembling the adhesive material may be applied to the cover piece before it is put in place. When the cover is thus secured in place the book is finished and ready for delivery. If to be mailed the address of the receiver may be printed on the cover or on a small label which may be aflixed to the cover.
When it is desired to open a book thus covered the cover is cut apart at the front" edge of the book. To facilitate the proper severance of the cover two lines of perforations or indentations 12 are formed inthe front edge portion of the book as shown in Fig. 3, and the severance of the cover is effected by tearing out the intervening strip 13. In most cases the lines 12 will be so located that when the strip 13 is removed; the front and back covers will be alike, and
will project by the front edge: of the book equally, the projecting portions of the cover protecting the edge of the book.
With a book covered in the manner de scribed the only external break in thesurw face of the cover in its original form is at the intersection of the hinge edge and the back;
side of the book, and is scarcely perceptible.
As the joint between the ends of the cover thebook cover. The portion 8 is not widerthan the usual margin at the hingeedge of the book and hence the usual matter may be printed on the inner surface of the book cover as well as on the front cover of the book.
It will -be understood that the cover strips usually have printed upon them the-illustra tions and descriptive matter which they bear (with the exception of the address of the Copies of this patent may be. obtained for subscriber or similar matter applicable to only one number of each edition) before being placed onv thebook body Which they are to cover; and, that the covers may be applied. and secured to the book bodies either manually or by suitable mechanism.
Having now described my invent-ion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patentyisr A book comprising a body portion formed of leaves connected together at the back or hinge edge of the book, and a continuous cover stripwhich surrounds the sides,-front edge and-backor hinge edge of said body portion, one endof saidcover strip' being lapped over and secured to the other end With the end'o'f theouter overlapping p01 ti'on terminating atone corner of the book, said cover strip being pern'ianently secured.
to said body portion at the I hinge edge of thehrtterandhaving formed in it two llnes ofindentations parallel to and disposed be-' tween the front edges of the book whereby 7 front and back book coversprojecting by the front edge ofthe book may be formed by removing'the portion of the cover strip between the lines of indentations.
