Description

-(No Model.)
.G. H. JENNISON.
PROTECTOR FOR THE ermans 0]? BOOK GOVEZRSP Nd. 269,425. Patented Dec'a19, 1882.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. JENNISON, OF FOXGROFT, MAINE.
PROTECTOR FOR THE CORNERS OF BOOK-COVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,425, dated December 19, 1882. Application filed March 11, 1882'. (No model.)
'to the'accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows the blank from which my protector is made; Fig. 2, inside view of cover withmy protector thereon. DetailB showsa section of cover and protector on a line passing through one of the perforations c.
The same letters indicate like parts.
My invention consists in an improved nietallic protector for the corners ofbooks, designed to be readily attached thereto andcapable of change from one book to another with little labor. It will be readily understood by reference to the annexed drawings, in which- At A, Fig. 1, is shown a blank of thin sheet metal irom which my protector is made. Of coursethe outline of this blank may be very considerably varied as taste may dictate. 'lhis blank is provided with oblong slits b b, which may, if desired, be burred or roughened on their inner sides, and with perforationsc 0 near the edges of the corners d d, burred or roughened upon their inner sides around the edges e. (See detail B.) To form my protector from this blank its corners d d are folded over upon the lines a: w, the cap thus formed placed over the corner of the book-cover, the corners d (I being upon the inside of the cover and the burred edges of the perforations in contact therewith. In this position a. slight tap from any suitable tool will force the burred edges into the material of the cover, holding the protector firmly in its place. The oblong slots 1) b assist in forming a regularly-rounded edge and tend to prevent the breaking of the metal. They also obviate any tendency in the folded-down corners to rise from the cover.
In order to change the corner-protector to another book, it is only necessary to raise the corners d (I with a screw-driver or other proper tool, removing the projecting edges of the cured to the cover without in any way marring it, and may be removed at pleasure, the oblong slots I) permitting the burred perforations 0 c to be pressed into the inner side of the cover and there retained, holding the corner in place without injury to the cover.
I do not claim the devices shown in the patent to T. P. Marston for a tag, February 1, 1870. In this the retaining-hooks pass entirely through the substance .to which the metal clasp is applied; nor do I claim the devices shown in patent of Elida M. Gapen, index-tag for books, of May 28, 1878. In this both edges of the clasp are serrated and pass into the body of the paper. My book-corner is of a difl'erent construction and purpose, that part ofit in contact with the outside of the book-cover being perfectly smooth to avoid marringit, while the burrs around the perforations simply indent slightly the inner portions of the cover, the oblong slots b b serving to overcome the natural spring of the sheet metal from which the corner is formed, allowing it to be firmly held in place.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A protector for the corners of books, consisting of the metallic sheet A, folded on the lines a: 00, smooth on the side in contact with the outside of the book-cover, and provided with the perforations c 0, burred at e, so as to slightly enter the cover on the inside, and with oblong slots 1) b, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of March, 1882.
GEORGE H. JENNISON. \Vitnesses:
