Be it known that I, FRANKLIN Gr. Pownns, a citizen of the United States of America, re-

' siding at Kansas City, in the county of Jackletters to the covers.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, such as will be first fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the book-covers in an open position, showing the book-leaves and the invention applied to the cover, a portion of the book-leaves adjacent to the lower leaf-holder being broken away. Fig. 2 is a view of a broken portion of one of the covers and the back with the inner surface of the cover partially removed, showing an enlarged view of the invention and the means for securing the invention to the cover. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the cover, showing the leaf-holder within the opening in the cover and the reinforcing-eyelet. Fig. 4 is a view of the invention shown within detachable guide-plates and an alternate construction of the end of the leaf-holder.

Similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, 5 5 indicate separate folding book-covers for holding the detachable book-leaves, and 6 indicates the wide intermediate strip yieldingly connected with the inner longitudinal edges of the covers and forming the back. I

Upon the inner surface of the cover is a layer of material, preferably leather pasteboard 7, which extends in the direction of the width of the covers from a point near the outer edge of the covers to within a short distance of the inner edge and nearly to the ends in the direction of the length of said covers.

In the pasteboard material, near each end of one of the covers, are rectangular-shaped openings 8, extending downwardly to the surface of the cover, and from said opening through the inner edge of the pasteboard extends a narrow slot 9. WVithin the rectangu lar-shaped opening'is arranged the novel leafholder 10, which consists of a fiat slidable spring-plate 12, narrow in width and placed in position adjacent to one side of the opening 8 and having its inner end bent at right angles and extended nearly to the opposite side of the opening. The slidable plate 12 is about the same thickness of the pasteboard 7, and the opening 8 and slot 9 in the pasteboard form the guides and the ends of the openings 8 the stops. The outer end of the slidable plate 12 extends a short distance from the inner edge of the pasteboard 7 when the plate is retracted in position, and upon said outer end of the plate and integral therewith is an upwardly and forwardly extended leaf-retaining curved hook 14. In the same cover 5 with the leaf-holder and near the junction of the inner longitudinal edge of said cover with the back 6 is a small opening 15, in which is fixedly secured a reinforcing-eyelet 16, in which eyelet the downwardly-extended end of the leafholding hook 14: extends a considerable distance.

I Extending over the pasteboard 7 and over the flat portions 12 of the leaf-holders is a sheet of thick cardboard 17, which .is glued to the upper surface of the pasteboard 7.

18 indicates the leaves of the book, which are perforated at 19 at their inner ends opposite the hooks 14 of the holder.

In operation and for the purpose of attach ing the perforate leaves to the cover the hook lt is raised from its position in the eyelet 16 and moved forward in position as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and above the back 6, the plate 12 sliding within the guide-opening 8 until it reaches the slot 9 and is checked by the inner sides of the opening 8. In this position the space between the end of the hook and the back is suflicient to enable the leaves to be engaged by the hook and folded upon the inner surface of the cover 5, provided with the leaf-holder. When the leaves are in position on the hook 12, the end of the hook is raised slightly in position, this being permitted by the guiding devices, and pushed backwardly until the end of the hook comes opposite the eyelet 16, when the hook is released and it enters the eyelet.

Instead of bending the plate 12 at its inner end at right angles said end may be made l shaped, as seen at 20 in Fig. 4.

The guide for the end of the leaf-holder is shown in the pasteboard, which guide, however, may be formed of metal, as at 21,'in stead of paper and secured to the cover. Upon the upper surface of the metal plate is secured .the cover 22, which may be also formed from metal. The hooks 14 are round;

but they may drawn square and pointed at the end. In the securing of bound leaves to the covers the leaves are first perforated and then attached, as heretofore described. The advantage of my leaf-holder consists in enabling the user of the book to refer to or write upon the inner margin of one leaf without the necessity of holding the other leaves away, thus affording a flat-opening book. Such modifications may be employed as are within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I now claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In leaf-holders a support for the leaves having openings therein, guiding devices upon said support, a slidable spring-plate within said guiding devices, and leaf-securing books I detachable leaves having openings in one of said covers, of guiding devices upon said cover and a slidable spring-plate within said guiding devices, and leaf-securing hooks adapted to engage with said openings.

3. The combination with a book-cover for detachable leaves having guiding devices, a slidable plate thereon, and a leaf-securing hook, said cover having an opening for end of the hook and a reinforcing-eyelet.

4:. The combination with book-covers for detachable leaves, separate inner and outer layers of flat material upon the inner surface of the covers, said inner layer having guideopenings, and a slot, a leaf-holder comprising a flat plate having a bent inner end within .the-guide-opening and a hook, said cover hav- FRANKLIN Gr.
