VEST.
(Application filed Jan. 21, 1,902.)

Witwe/ses UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
ELMER R.WOOD, OF SALEM, NEW JERSEY.
VEST.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,767, dated December 2, 1902;
Application led January 21,1902. Serial No. 90,691. (No model.)
`.To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known thatLELMER R. WOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in
the county of Salem and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vests; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in vests, and while designed more especially for mens Wear the same principles may be applied to garments for ladies and children.
The object of the invention is to provide a' reversible vest which when worn with either side out will present the appearance of an ordinary single-breasted vest and which may be made either with or withouta lapel or collar. I
My invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which showing the side on which the buttons are Mss secured. Fig. 4 represents a view of the same half-breast of the vest as that shown in Fig.
8, but looking at the opposite side thereof. Fig. 5 represents a View similar to Fig.2, showing my invention applied to a vest without lapel or collar.
A designates a vest, which is made in the usual general shape, the breast having the two front halves B and O connected together by the back D. The two front halves or f breasts B and O of the vest are finished off,
so that either side may be worn exposed, and theay may be finished in different kinds of cloth or other material. Each of the breasts B and O is provided with a row of buttonholes 19 and o0 along the edges b and c.
For convenience in referring to the two sides of the vest I have designated the side shown exposed in Figs. l and 2 as the sides B and O of the two breasts B and O, respectively, and the other sides of the same breasts as B2 and O2. On the side B of the breast B are secured a row of buttons b', Which'are just back of the inner ends of the buttonholes bo, and to the side Clf3 of the breast O are secured a row of buttons c2 just back of the inner ends of the buttonholes c". The buttons on one of the breasts are preferably secured a little below the buttonholes and those on the other breast a little above the buttonholes to afford greater facility in buttoning the vest.
Both breasts are finished ed in exactly the saine manner, each having one row of buttonholes and one row of buttons set just back of the buttonholes, and each breast has pockets on each side, as shown at C3 and C4 in Figs. 3 and 4E.
The vest may be provided with lapels B5 `and O5, in which case a lapel is formed on each side of each. breast, or Ait may be made without lapels, as shown in Fig. 5.
By-the herein -described construction it will be seen that I provide a reversible vest having a single plain edge, either stitched or bound, one row of buttons and one row of buttonholes in each of the breasts and which when buttoned up With either side out will present the appearance of a single-breasted vest, the same being very simple in construction and easy to manufacture. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The herein-described garment, the same comprising a front opening having upon the meeting edges of each portion thereof a series of buttonholes, each buttonhole being provided at the inner extremity thereof with a button, one series of buttons being upon one face of the garment, and the other series of buttons being upon the other face of the garment, whereby the garment may be worn either side out and show only as a singlebreasted garment, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELMER R. WOOD.
