SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,106, dated November 1 1, 1902.

Beit known that I, LUCY MAY JONEs,a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and. State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in garment-supporting devices,and has for its object to provide a device of this kind of simple and inexpensive construction espe! outside said shirt-waist means of attachment to the trousers.

The invention also contemplates certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the improved garment supporting device, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings,which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure l is a sectional view drawn to a small scale and showing the improved garment-supporter as it appears in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view showing a portion of the iiexible Waistband of the device, together with one of the slides thereon; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the opposite face of the slide. Referring first to Figs. l to 5, l indicates the trousers, 2 the drawers, and 3 the shirtwaist, which latter is made with a short skirt and is provided around its inner side at a point just below the upper edge of the trousers-waistband, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, with a reinforcing band or strip 4, stitched to the shirt-waist, and at suitable points along said band or strip are provided buttonholes 5 for the passage of buttons 6, projecting from the inner faces of slides 7, which form parts or elements of the improved supporter. The buttons 6 inside the shirt-waist, as shown in Figs. l and 4, are adapted to be engaged with the ends of Suspenders 8, there being six of the buttons arranged in pairs for the respective suspender-ends.

The buttons 6 are of reduced sizee-that is, they have heads of less dimensions than the body portions of the slides whereon they are held, the slides being so formed as to project beyond opposite sides of the heads of said buttons, so that while the buttons are free to pass through the buttonholes the slides are themselves held outside the shirt-waist and are prevented from slipping entirely through the buttonholes to the inner side of the shirtwaist.

The slides 7 are formed from pieces of sheet or plate metal having their upper portions 9 bent over the upper edge of a waistband l1, preferably formed from thin elastic metal, and the lower portions of said pieces of sheet metal are also bent over the lower edge of said waistband, as shown at 1,0 in Figs. 2. and 4, so as to permit the parts or elements 7 to be slid or adj usted along the waistband 11 to cause them to stand in proper position for the buttons 6 to be engaged with the suspenderends. The waistband 11 extends entirely around the person and has at one end a loop or guide l2 to receive the opposite end, so as to permit of sliding one end over the other to accommodate the waistband to the girth.

The upper bent part 9 of each slide 7 has on its outer side an integral loop or eye 13, formed, as herein shown, by slitting and bending the edge portion of the slide, and said loop or eye is adapted to receive a depending tongue or hook 14, integrally formed on a TCO metal plate 15, which forms another element of the improved garment-supporter, and is provided at suitable points with openings 16, by means of which it may be sewed fast inside the trousers-waistband at a point corresponding with the location of the ordinary suspenderbutton. The lower end of the plate 15 is also bent upward to form an integral hook 17, adapted to receive aloop 18 upon the. drawers 2, so as to afford an eficient means for supporting the drawers.

In use the Suspenders 8 are put on under the shi rt-waist and the waistband 11, carrying the slides 7, is passed around the waist outside the shirt-waist, the buttons 6 being passed through the buttonholes 5 and engaged with the suspender-ends. The tongues or hooks 14 on the plates 15, attached to the trousers, are then passed down through the loops or eyes 13, so as to support the trousers properly from the slides. An ordinary waist-belt may, if desired, be worn outside the trousers to give an improved appearance; but this is not essential.

The improved supporter, constructed as above described,is of an extremely simple and inexpensive nature and permits of conveniently supporting the trousers without requiring the use of a waist-belt and without exposing the Suspenders. The plates 15 also aord a convenient means for supporting the drawers whether the other portions of the improved supporter be employed or not, and

the employment of the elastic waistband 11 assists in ,holding the trousers properly in place without interfering in any way with the free movements of the body. The reinforcing band or strip 4 in the shirt-waist also prevents tearing at the buttonholes; but it is evident that it is not essential that said strip be carried entirely around the waist, since it may be replaced by small reinforces, one at each buttonhole 5.

It will be seen from the above description that the buttons 6,passed through the shirtwaist, serve to keep the skirt of the waist from pulling or working up above the trouserswaistband, and it will also be seen that the improved device permits of supporting the trousers without placing any strain whatever upon the shirt-waist itself or interfering in any way with the fullness necessary for comfort and for a proper appearance of the waist.

From the above description it will also be evident that the improved supporter is capable of some modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts of the device herein set forth. For example, in some cases the lower hook 17 of the plate 15 may be omitted and said plate be constructed, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, with a pendent tongue or hook 19 at its lower edge for engagement with the corresponding loop or eye 13, said tongue or hook 19 having its lower end bent or curved, as shown at 20, to prevent it from accidental withdrawal from the loop or eye.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A garment supporter comprising two parts or elements, one provided with means for attachment to the trousers, and the other adapted to be passed through a shirt-waist or similar garment in the same horizontal plane as said trousers attachment and having means for detachable connection with a suspender inside said shirtwaist in the same horizontal plane as said detachable connection, the two parts being constructed for detachable engagement one with the other, and one part adjustable in a horizontal plane about the body of the wearer.

2. A garment supporter comprising two parts or elements, one part provided with a tongue and the other designed to pass through ashirt-waist or similar garment, and provided with an eye for detachable engagement with the tongue, the first part being constructed for adjustable mounting on a garment andto receive a suspender-end within the shirt-waist or garment, and the other having means for supporting the drawers.

3. A garment-supporter comprising a device adapted to pass though a shirt-waist or similar garment and having inside the shirtwaist means for detachable connection with a suspender, and having means out-side the shirt-waist for detachable connection to the trousers, said detachable connections being in the same horizontal plane at the waist-line, and a portion to slide in a horizontal plane about the body of the wearer.

A garment-supporter comprising a device adapted to pass through a shirt-waist or similar garment and having inside the shirtwaist means for detachable connection with a suspender, and having means outside the shirt-waist for detachable connection to the trousers, and a portion to slide in a horizontal plane about the body of the wearer and a plate adapted to be attached to the trousers and having means for attachment to the drawers.

5. A garment-supporter comprising a band adapted to be passed about the waist and two parts or elements adapted for detachable engagement, one part being adapted for attachment to the trousers and the other part being adapted to be slidingly mounted on said band and to be passed through a shirt-waist or similar garment and adapted for detachable connection with a suspender inside said shirtwaist, substantially as set forth.

6. A garment-supporter comprising a band adapted to be passed about the waist, slides adjustable on said band and provided on one side with devices adapted to be passed through a shirt-waist or similar garment and connected to Suspenders and having a loop on the opposite side, and plates adapted for attachment to the trousers and having devices for detachable engagement with the loops of the slides, substantially asset forth.

7. In agarment-supporter, the combination of an elastic waistband, a slide formed of a metal plate having portions bent over the edges of the waistband, one of said bent porp tions having a loop or eye produced in it, a

button carried by the slide for engagement with a suspender and a plate adapted for attachment to the trousers and provided with a tongue for engagement With said loop or eye, substantially as set forth.

- respectively, a hook for engagement with a loop on the drawers and a tongue, and a part having an eye adapted to be detachably engaged by the tongue and provided with a button to be passed through a shirt-Waist or similar garment and adapted to be detachably engaged'with a suspender inside said shirtwaist, substantially as set forth.
