UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
JOIINWV. \VRIGIIT, OF ELK CITY, KANSAS.
BOX-LID HOLDER AND LABEL-DISPLAYER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 706,628, dated August 12, 1902.
Application filed April 5, 1902.
To all whom, it nuty concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elk City, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box -Lid Holders and Label-Displayers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
Myinvention relates to improvements in box-lid holders and label-displayers.
My invention is particularly adapted to be used on cigar-boxes or confectionery boxes havingthe lids hinged to the bodies of the boxes.
The object of my inventionis to provide a device that will limit the rearward tipping of the lid when placed in the open position and at the same time provide means by which the box can be readily handled by taking hold of the lid and without danger of spilling the contents of the box.
My invention provides further novel means for engaging the device with the lid.
It provides still further a device for displaying labels or price-tags upon the forward side of the lid.
Other novel features of construction are hereinafter fully described and clamed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one manner of constructing an article in accordance with the principles of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a box provided with a lid-holder of my invention, the lid of the box being shown in the Fig. 2 isan end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the lid-holder, taken on the dotted line Ct b of Fig. 4, and showing a portion of the lid. Fig. 4 is a rearview of the device with the thumb-screw removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
A indicates the box, and 13 the lid, hinged thereto in the manner ordinary with cigarboxes.
0 indicates a flat metallic plate adapted to be secured to the rear or top side of the lid 13 by means of a screw D atone end and by a tongue E at the other end of the plate. The up er end of the plate, as viewed in Fig. 3,
Serial No. 101,469. (No model.)
- is preferably provided with a boss F, stamped up from the body of the plate on the rear side thereof and provided therethrough with a hole to receive the screw D. The object of the boss is to take up that unthr'eaded por- .tion of the screw next to the head. If this were not provided, a very small screw, as screws are ordinarily made, would ,be required to be used to prevent the screw projecting too far through the box-lid; but with the use of the boss F the plate Ocan be quite thin and a good-sized screw Dcan be employed. The tongue E is preferably cut from the body of the plate 0 and formed on the forward side of the plate 0 or upon the side opposite the boss F. The tongue is first bent forwardly, and then a portion thereof is bent so as to be disposed substantially parallel with the body of the plate, the extreme outer end of the tongue being forwardly bent, so as to permit ready insertion behind the tongue of the price-tag G. The tongueE may be of a resilient nature, so as to be readily sprung outward to receive-the tag, or it may be comparatively rigid. In addition to its function of holding the tag G in position, the tongue E, by embracing the hinged edge of the lid B, securelyretains the lower end of the plate 0 in position on the lid. The lower end of the plate 0, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3,; projects beyond the hinged edge of the lid and is bent near the tongue E slightly rearward, thus forming a brace to limit, by resting-upon the rear side of the body of the box, the rearward tipping of the lid past a certain inclined position. The degree to which the plate is rearwardly bent depends upon the angle of inclination required for the lid 13.
My invention is operated as follows: The tongue E is first forced to embrace the hinged edge of the lid B by inserting it between the lid and the edge of the body of the box. The screw D is then inserted through the hole in the boss F and screwed into the lid B until the shoulder-ring of the screw rests against the boss F. The price-tag is then inserted upon the front side of the lid behind the tongue E, which can be bent outwardly sufficiently for the purpose. As thus aftixed upon thebox the lid-holder permits the handling of the box by means of the lid without danger of the contents of the box being ejected.
When the box is placed in the show-case or other place of display, the lid may be tipped to an inclined rearward position, as shown in the drawings, the plate C at its lower end preventing the lid from falling too far back- Ward. The label or tag is thus placed in a prominent position for display purposes.
( While I have shown a plate as the member to be secured to the lid, it is obvious that any equivalent device may be used instead and other modificationscan be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is
1. A box-lid holder and label-displayer comprising a plate provided near one end with a hole for the insertion of a securing device, and having a portion of the other end of theplate rearwardly bent, and provided with a forwardly-extending tongue projecting from the plate near said bent portion, the said tongue being provided with a portion thereof disposed substantially parallel to the body of the plate, and the outer end of the tongue being bent away from the said plate, substantially as described.
2. A box,- lid holder and label-displayer comprising a plate the body portion of which is provided with a rearwardiy-projecting boss having a hole therethrough, and provided also with a tongue projecting away from the body and having a'portion thereof disposed parallel with the body of the plate, substantially as described.
3. As an article of manufacture, a lid-holder and label-displayer consisting of a metallic plate having a boss formed on one side provided with a hole therethrough and having a tongue out out from the body of the plate and extending forwardly therefrom and disposed in a portion thereof substantially parallel to the body of the plate, the said tongue being disposed upon the side of the plate opposite the said boss, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN w. WRIGHT.
