J. JONES, JR. COMBINED BOX LID SUPPORT AND LABEL HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 1, 1903.

Patented January 26, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED BOX-LIDSUPPORT AND LABEL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '7 50,655, dated January 26, 1904. Application filed June 1, 1903. Serial No. 159,670. (No model.)
To all whom it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES J ONES, Jr. a citizen of the United States, residing at Jasper, in the county of Jasper and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Combined Box- Lid Support and Label-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined box-lid supports and label-holders, and is designed for use in connection with boxes having hinged lids which are ordinarily kept open in order ltao display to advantage the contents of the The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and thoroughly efficient device of the character described which may be applied to a box with a hinged lid to support the lid at any desired angle to the boxwall, so that the box may be lifted, using the lid as a handle, and which is especially designed to cooperate with a label of peculiar form to hold it in suitable relation to the boxlid in order to advertise or disclose the price of the articles displayed in the box.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character specified which is so constructed that the parts thereof will lie in close contact with the side wall and lid of the box without scarring the same and which is adapted to hold a label more securely and in more exact relation to the box-lid than other devices of the same class, so far as I am aware.
In attaining the objects above stated I make use of the device hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the various views in which they appear, and having the novel features thereof particularly specified in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a box with a hinged lid having my combined box-lid support and label-holder applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section through a box with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a front View of the box-lid support and label-holder with the label removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the preferred form of label.
Referring to the drawings in detail, B designates a box of the type to which this invention is designed to be applied.
L designates the lid of the box, which is hinged thereto in any suitable manner, leaving a very small narrow opening between the margin of the lid and the box or else having the space between the lid and the box covered by a hinge of flexible material which may be readily pierced.
l designates generally the combined lidsupport and label-holder, having a body portion 2, downwardly-disposed and outwardlydiverging box-engaging arms 3, upwardly and rearwardly inclined lid-supporting arms 4, which diverge slightly toward their free ends, and a tongue 5, which projects upward and slightly forward from the body portion 2, then upward and rearward over the box-lid L. The arms 3 and 4 are flat on the surfaces of contact with the box-wall and the lid and lie in close contact with said wall and lid when the device is in use.
The material of which the device is made is preferably sheet metal of Very slight resiliency, so that the arms 3 and 4 may be readily bent to any desired inclination to each other.
The tongue 5 tapers gradually toward its free end, where it is slightly upturned, as shown, so as to present an inclination which will pass readily over the edge of the box-lid, and it is provided about midway of its length with a slight offset 6, which acts as a retainer for the label 7. The preferred form of label comprises a body portion 8 and a strap or loop 9, provided on the label on the rear surface thereof and adapted to engage the offset 6 in the tongue 5, as seen in Fig. 2. The label is thus effectively secured upon the tongue 5, so that it will not be accidentally disengaged by a salesman in removing the contents of the box for sale and held in such manner that the label cannot be shifted materially in position. This means of supporting the label is a special feature of the invention and one which greatly increases its utility, as without some positive means of holding the label the frequent introduction of a salesmans hand Within the box is apt to disengage the label from its support, or if the label is not completely disengaged it is apt to be shifted in position so as to mar the appearance of the display of the goods of which the boX forms a part.
In using my invention the tongue 5 is introduced between the box-wall and the lid and slipped upward over the lid until the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the lid supported by means of the combined lid-support and label-holder. The label 7 is then fixed in position by slipping the strap'or loop 9 between the tongue 5 and the lid of the box and forcing the label downward until the strap or loop passes below the offset 6, and the accidental removal of the label is thereby prevented.
In the preferred form of label I use a back of metal in which the strap or loop 9 is formed and cover the front of the label-holder with paper or other suitable surfacing material, so as to entirely cover the opening in the back through which the tongue 5 passes. It is, however, obvious that any form of label having a strap or tongue provided at the rear thereof may be used in lieu of that illustrated.
It is also obvious that an ordinary card may be forced down between the tongue 5 and the box-lid L and serve, after a fashion, the same purpose as the label 7 or its equivalent.
Having thus described the construction and use of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined box-lid support and labelholder comprising box-engaging arms, boxlid-supporting arms disposed at any angle to the box-engaging arms, and a tongue projecting upward from between said lid-supporting arms, and bent backward substantially into parallelism with said lid-supporting arms.
2. A combined box-lid support and labelholder comprising box-engaging arms, lidsupporting arms disposed at an angle to the box-engaging arms, a tongue of slightly resilient material projecting upward between said lid-supporting arms, then bent backward into substantially parallelism with said lid-supporting arms, and having an oifset about mid way of its length.
3. The combination with a combined box-lid support and label-holder comprising box-engaging arms, lid-supporting arms, and a labelholding tongue disposed in substantial parallelism with said lid-supporting arms and having an oifset therein, of a label having a smooth forward surface and provided on the rear surface thereof with a strap forming a guide within which the tongue fits snugly. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aifixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
