AMUUCQ LZ O I ZZW ATTOR N EYJ,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ANNIE LOUISE MATLAOK, OF CHESTNUT HILL, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER AND WAIST-ADJUSTER.
SJPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,690, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed October 26. 1901. Serial No. 80,115. (No modeL) T0 ctZZ whom. it may concern:
Be it known that LANNIE LOUISE MATLAOK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of ChestnutHill, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Supporters and Waist-Adjusters, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The subject of the present invention is an improved garmentsupporter and Waist-ad juster for ladies use, it being designed imre particularly for properly retaining .thesetbfi a corset cover or waist and at the same time efliciently supporting a skirt.
With the above objects in view the invent-ion comprises an inner tape adapted to be passed around the wearers waist immediately external to the corset and suitably secured by a tongue and buckle, this tape being provided at its rear with a slide having outer horizontal studs, with which the lower rear portion of the corset-cover 0r shirt-waist is intended to be held in engagement bya somewhat similar-shaped plate carried by a second and outer tape, also having a tongue and buckle, openings in said last-mentioned plate serving to pinch the material of the cover or waist over and on the studs of the slide at the inner side, in which condition it is positively secured by metal loops having contracted openings, the larger portions of which are adapted to be passed over the heads with the pinched material, after which the loops can be moved downward to cause the studshanks to enter the narrow portions of their slotsand result in said loops .being engaged at the rear of the stud-heads. The lower portions of these loops carry horizontally-disposed safety-pins, by which the rear portion of the Waistband of the skirt is engaged to efficiently support the skirt. at this point, a smaller slide carried by the outer tape hav-' ing at its inner side an upwardly-extending pin for engaging the corset, and so retain said slide that the front portion of the skirt-waistband will take under. a downwardly-turned hook on said front slide and be held against undue rising. r
l l While I have in the foregoing general statement of invention described the invention as comprising certain features, it will be understood, as will more fully appear, that some of "the parts maybe modified or changed and kled. Fig. 2 is aview showing on an enlarged scale the exterior of the studded slide of the inner tape. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the rear plate of the outer tape, and Fig. 4 a detached view of the smaller slide at the front.
At the outset it will be comprehended that the inner tape A and outer tape 13, while of thin, are at the same time of strong and durable, material, the other parts completing the device being generally of such light weight and so disposed as to render the device when in use as comfortable as possible. These two tapes are of such lengths as to adapt them to be passed around the waist of the wearer eX- terior to the corset and each be adjustably secured by a tongue-and-buckle connection a andb, respectively. For comfort, as well as other important reasons to be explained,
slide, sojthat the latter maybe shifted thereon to occupy the proper point at the waist to wit, the rear. This slide ha exteriorly a plurality of horizontally-projecting studs 0',
provided with heads 0.
D refers to a horizontally=curved plate of thin metal, through theend slots (1 of which are passed and secured the looped extremt ties b of the two sections forming the outer tape, thereby positively attaching said plate to the outer tape. This plate has circular openings D of such liberal diameter as to permit the free passage of the studs C when the plate is externally applied against the slide. With the plate and slide thus positioned the heads and a considerable part of the shanks of the studs will project beyond the outer face of the plate. Thin metal loops E are intended to engage and be suspended by the projecting portions of the studs, the slots presented by said loops each comprising a lower large portion a and upper contracted part e, so that the former can be passed over the stud-head,while the loops can then move downward, so that the stud-shank will lie in the slot of the narrower portion of the loop and the latter be securely engaged behind the stud-head. Carried by the lower parts of the loops E are horizontally-disposed safety-pins E.
On the tape B at the front thereof is a smaller slide F, having at its inner side an upwardly-extending pin f, while the upper portion of the slide atits frontis formed into a downwardly turned hook f.
In use the inner tape A is secured around the wearers waist exterior to the corset and the material of the corset-cover, the underwaist, or the dress-waist, as the case may be,
at the lower rear portion thereof drawn down exterior to the studs 0. Now by applying the plate D against the slide 0 the studs will be crowded through the openings D, thus pinching the material on the studs. With the parts in this position the pin fof the slide F at the front is caused by an upward movement to engagethe material of the corset, thereby holding said slide, with its'tape, in'a suitably-depressed position. The loops E are next caused to engage the material-covered projecting portions of the studs and by reason of their contracted slots are not only themselves securely engaged, but also serve to more positively clamp the material on the studs and the slide 0 and plate D together. The skirt is then adjusted so that the upper edge of its'waistband takes under the hook f at the front and is thereby prevented from rising thereat, while its rear portion is secured by the safety-pins E in an even and neat manner. By the employment of an outer jacket or belt the connection of the skirt-waistband with the other parts can be satisfactorily concealed.
The location of the front slide F and the buckle connections severally at different points of the waist, as described, avoids such discomfort as would be experienced were these parts, or even any two of them, to lie one over the other. Moreover, such arrangement secures a more regular and even appearance for the waist at the front.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a supporting provision carrying studs at the waist rear and a perforated plate adapted to fit over said studs.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a supporting provision carrying at the waist rear headed studs, of a perforated plate adapted to fit over said studs whereby the headed portions of the latter will project through the perforations in the plate.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a supporting provision carrying at the waist rear headed studs, of a perforated plate adapted for the passage of the studs, and loops for engaging said studs and provided with skirt-engaging means.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a supporting provision carrying at the waist. rear headed studs, of a perforated plate adapted for the passage of the studs, skirt-engaging provision, and means F at the waist front having a hook beneath which the skirt-waistband engages.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a supporting provision carrying at the waist rear headed studs, of a perforated plate adapted for the passage of the studs, depending loops engaging said studs and having safety-pins for engaging the skirt.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with an inner waist-tape having a buckle connection, and carrying at its rear headed studs, of an outer waist-tape having a buckle connection and provided with a rear perforated plate adapted for the passage of the studs.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination with an inner waist-tape having a buckle connection and carrying at its rear headed studs, of an outer waist-tape having a buckle connection and provided with a rear perforated plate adapted for the passage of the studs, and skirt-engaging provision depending from said studs.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination with an inner waist-tape having a buckle connection and a rear metal slide provided with headed studs,of an inner Waisttape having a buckle connection and a perforated plate through which the studs are adapted to project.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two Witnesses, this 22d day of October, A. D. 1901.
ANNIE LOUISE MATLACK.
