UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCEQ RICHARD T. CLARKE, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
BUTTON ATTACHMENT FOR SUSPENDER-ENDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,429, dated August 13, 1901.
Application filed January 2, 1901. Serial No. 41,870. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD T. CLARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Button Attachments for Suspender-Ends, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of Suspender-ends, and the objects of myinvention are to provide an improved button attachment for the terminal straps or ends of suspenders of such construction as to facilitate the ready connection of buttons with the buttonhole-tabs of said suspender-ends and to so construct said button attachment as to impart a desired rigidity to the buttonhole-tab and at the same time admit of said button and its supporting-plate being readily disconnected when desired from the suspenderend. These objects I accomplish in the mannerillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View in perspective of the lower portion of one of the main straps of suspenders with the suspender-ends or terminal straps depending therefrom, the latter being provided with my button attachment; and Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective of the button and its supporting-plate.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout both views.
In carrying out my invention I employ an oblong plate 1, which is preferably of metal,
although the same may be produced of any suitable and sufficiently rigid material. In forming the plate 1 I provide one end thereof on one side with an outwardly-projectin g button, of which 2 represents the head, and 3 the shank or neck portion. This end of the plate 1 on which the button is provided is preferably rounded to conform to the usual corresponding rounded end of the buttonholetab of the Suspender-end. At suitable locations in the plate 1 I form on opposite sides of the center of the length thereof transverse slotted openings 4, the material cut or stamped from the plate to form said openings being turned upward or outward at the inner ends of each of said openings, resulting in the production of projecting clampingtongues 5. These plates 1 are adapted in the mannerhereinafter described to be connected with the usual buttonhole-tabs 6 of snspender terminal straps7. In producing this connection the head and shank of the button are inserted through the outer end of the buttonhole 8 from the rear side of the tab 6, while the outwardly-projecting clam ping-tongues 5 are similarly inserted through the inner portion of the buttonhole. This being accomplished, the clamping-tongues are pressed in opposite directions against the outer face of the tab 6, thus clamping the plate 1 into close connection with the rear side of said tab and retaining the button projecting from the tab in the manner indicated in the drawings.
From this construction and operation it will be seen that any ordinary suspender-end having a buttonhole therein may be readily provided with a projecting button, which button may be adapted to engage a buttonhole in a trousers-button or a suitable loop or other catch connected with the trousers-band.
It is obvious that the herein described method of providing the Suspender-ends with projecting buttons will be particularly adapted for engaging the ends of suspenders with the trousers in cases where it is desirable to wear the suspenders beneath the outer shirt, in which case the button is inserted into the trousers-buttonhole or receiving-loop from the inner side of the trousers-band, the goods of the shirt being forced by the head of the button into said buttonreceiving device. I do not, however, desire to limit my invention to the use above described, and therefore confine myself, as hereinafter set forth in the claim, to the means whereby the suspenderthe combination with a suspendertei'zninal adapted to be clamped downward against the strap having a buttonhole therein, of a plate Suspender-end, substantially as specified. 1 having a button projecting from one face thereof and having clamping-tongues5 also RICHARD CLARKE 5 projecting therefrom, said clamping-tongues In presence ofand button-head adapted to be inserted A. L. PHELPS,
through said bnttonhole and said tongues W. L. MORRQW.
