To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTHOLOMEW JACOB, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of Westohester, State of New York, have invented new and original Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in buckles for suspenders, belts and other purposes; and the object of my invention 1s to render the process of buckling and unbuckling the strap easier than in the case of the ordinary buckle now in use, by means of an adjustable tongue or tongues, substantially as is hereinafter described, which can be so manipulated that it is possible to insert them into or withdraw them from the hole or holes in the strap without being compelled to draw that part of the strap where the hole or holes in question are beyond the forward end of the buckle frame. 1 attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved buckle in strap-engaging position. Fig. 2 is a lateral View of buckle in same position as in Fig. 1, showing the manner in which strap is applied. The buckle frame a is preferably shaped as shown, its rear end being drawn in at the center, and is provided with catch n. Horizontal crossbar b is loosely swung by means of links (1 from points 2 on the rear end of frame a, andis adapted to be caught and held in place by means of said catch it engaging socket with which said crossbar is provided. The ends of said crossbar b are adapted to engage the sides of said frame a. One or more tongues a form integral parts of said crossbar b as shown in Fig. 6, and are adapted to engage the forward end of said frame a. Member 6 to which the end 9 of the strap is permanently attached in the usual manner as shown in Fig. 2, is hinged on the rear end of said frame a at points 1.

To operate the buckle the free end of the strap 9 should be inserted through the for-' ward end of the frame as shown in Fig. 2, the required hole or holes being in position on said forward end and the buckle being in the position shown in Fig. 3. By pressing crossbar I) downwards, at the same time guiding tongues 0 into holes aforesaid, cross-bar I) wil be locked and thus held in place by means of catch n engaging socket p. The process of unbuckling consists of raising and drawing back crossbar 6, thereby disengaging hole p from catch a, and consequently withdrawing tongues c from holes in strap.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a buckle, the combination of a frame, a cross-bar having one or more tongues as an integral part thereof, and one or more links connecting said cross-bar with the rear end of said frame, said rear end of the frame and said cross-bar being provided respectively with a member of a separable fastener for detachably connecting said cross-bar and said frame, substantially as described.
2. In a buckle, the combination of a frame, the rear end of which is drawn in at the center thereof; a cross-bar, the ends of which are adapted to engage the sides of said frame, having one or more tongues as an integral part thereof, and one or more links connecting said cross-bar with the rear end of said frame, said rear end of the frame and said cross-bar being provided respectively with a member of a separable fastener for detachably connecting said cross-bar and said frame; and a member hinged on said rear end for the purpose of permanently attaching a strap thereto, substantially as described.
3. A buckle consisting of frame a; crossbar I) having one or more tongues c as an integral part thereof, and one or more links (1 connecting said cross-bar b with the rear end of said frame a, said rear end of the frame and said cross-bar 11 being provided respectively with members a and p of a separable fastener for detachably connecting said cross-bar b and said frame a, substantially as described.
