.Be it known that I, BARTIioLoMnw Jaoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of 'estchester, State of New York, have invented a new and original Buckle, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in buckles used on belts, trunk-straps, harness, &c.; and the object of my invention is to render the process of buckling and unbuckling the strap less difficult than with the ordinary buckle now in use by means of an adjustable tongue which can be so manipulated that it is possible to insert it into or withdraw it from the hole in the strap without being compelled to draw that part of the strap where the hole in question is beyond the outer end of the frame of the buckle. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved buckle when in use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my buckle, showing the knuckle 1] swung back. Fig. 3 is a side view of my improved buckle.

My invention consists of a buckle-frame a; a knuckle (Z, hinged on the rear end of said frame 1/; a horizontal cross-bar a, made a part of said knuckle (I, the ends of which are adapted to fit into and be caught by catches 11, provided :for the purpose on either side of said frame a; a tongue 7/, one end of which is pivoted on the knuckle (Z and horizontal crossbar L aforesaid, adapted for engagement with the outer end of the frame a; a second horizontal cross-bar c at right angles with said tongue 7) at a point substantially two-thirds of the distance from the pivotal point aforesaid and made a part of it parallel to the first horizontal cross-bar e aforesaid, the ends of which are adapted to engage the sides of the frame a. The sides of the frame a are slightly curved in order to assist the second horizontal cross-bar o aforesaid in guiding the tongue in its direction for engagement with the outer end of the frame a.

The material with which my improved buckle should be made should be metal of any description, preferably steel.

My improved buckle is operated as follows: Raise and draw back the knuckle (Z and horizontal cross-bar c. The buckle is then ready l for use. The operation of buckling is as follows: Insert the ends of the strap upward through the frame 1/ and draw it through as much as is required, the hole through which the tongue/1 is to be inserted being in position on the outer end of the frame a. Press back into place the knuckle (Z and the horizontal cross-bar c. This will press the tongue I) forward toward the hole in the strap through which its end is to be inserted. In this operation the horizontal cross-bar 0 will guide the tongue 7) toward said hole and will prevent it from going downward through the frame a. The operation of unbuckling is simple. Raise and draw back the knuckle (Z and crossbar 0. This will withdraw the end of' the tongue Z) from the hole in the strap.

From the above operation it may be seen that with my improved buckle it is unnecessary to draw that part of the strap where the hole is (through which the end of the tongue is or is to be inserted) beyond the outer end of the frame. This is advantageous either where the article to be strapped-v. a trunk-takes up just enough space to permit said hole to go no farther than the outer end of the frame or where it becomes necessary to unfasten a very tight strap. My improved buckle may also be used as the ordinary buckle is when the knuckle (Z and the crossbar 0 are caught and held, in place by the catches n on the sides of the frame a, the tongue 5 being pivoted as already described.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In a buckle, a combination of a frame; a knuckle hinged on the rear end of said frame; a horizontal cross-bar made a part of said knuckle, the ends of which are adapted to catch in and be held in place by catches provided for the purpose on either side of the frame; a tongue pivoted on the knuckle, adapted to engage the outer end of the frame, substantially as described.

2. In a buckle, a combination of a frame;.a knuckle hinged on the rear end of said frame; a horizontal cross-bar made a part of said knuckle, the ends of which are adapted to catch in and be held in place by catches provided for the purpose on either side of the frame; a tongue pivoted on the knuckle, adapted to engage the outer end of the frame, guided in its direction for such engagement by a second cross-bar, which is made a part of said tongue, the ends of which are adapted to engage the sides of the frame, substantially as described.

3. In a buckle, acombination of a frame; a knuckle, the arms of which are pivoted on the sides of and near the rear end of said frame; a horizontal cross-bar made a part of said knuckle, the ends of which are adapted to catch in and be held in place by catches provided for the purpose on either side of the frame; a tongue pivoted on the knuckle, adapted to engage the outer end of the frame, substantially as described.

4. In a buckle, a combination of a frame; a knuckle, the arms of which are pivoted on the sides of and near the rear end of said frame; a horizontal cross-bar made a part of said knuckle, the ends of which are adapted to catch in and be held in place by catches provided for the purpose on either side of the frame; a tongue pivoted on the knuckle, adapted to engage the outer end of the frame, guided in its direction for such engagement by a second cross-bar, which is made a part of said tongue, the ends of which are adapted to engage the sides of the frame, substantially as described.
