Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 6,783, dated October 9,1849.
I Harlem, in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bandboxes for Contaim ing Bonnets, Hats, and other Articles, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specication.

Fig. 4 is asection of the rollers for forming grooves in the box for the reception of the concavo-convex top and bottom of the same.

lThe nature of this invention and improvement consists in forming, inside the lower part of the body of the bandbox and inside the part surrounding the same composing the lid or cover, grooves or creases by means of iiuted and grooved rollers and inserting in said grooves, by springing and gluing, concavo-convex heads or top and bottom, and in applying above the top another concavo-convex top board in such a manner as to give strength to the box and leave a space between the lower edge of the body of the same and the bottom to prevent the bonnets, hats, or other articles contained in the box being injured by water or dampness getting in from below, and a space between the upper edge of thecover and the two concavo-convex spring'boards of the top to prevent the same being bent from anything heavy being placed on the same. The particular design in leaving the bottom of the box concave is thata hat in being placed in the box may rest upon the edge of the tip of the hat, thereby preserving the main surface of it.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction.
A is the body of the box, made of the usual or most approved form, pared oft" on the edges where joined, and glued or otherwise fastened together after the manner of ship-lapping.
B is the body of the lid or cover.
G is thebottom ofthe box,made concavocon Vex, and sprung and glued into grooves made on the inside of the body ofthe box a short distance above its lower edge by passing it,when inastraight piece, or when connected as represented, as pleasure or convenience may dictate, between a grooved and ribbed roller arranged one above the other after the manner of the grooving-rollers of tin and sheet-iron workers.

It will be observed that the box formed after this design does not require any sewing, but is put and held together entirely by glue.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of the concavo convex heads or top and bottom boards, C D, inserted into grooves formed in the bodies of the box and lid, and secured by gluing with the additional concavo top board, E, susceptible of being replaced at pleasure, as herein set forth.
