To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH DisTER, a` citizen of the United States, residing in Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a nevv and useful Improvement in Crated Vashboilers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in the construction of Wash boilers crated for shipment or storage. v

Heretofore Wash boilers having the customary dome shaped covers have beenmade with upright sides, the cover'of each boiler being placed insidethe boiler for shipment, and the boilers are either crated separately or two or more of them are crated together in a crate equaling the aggregatefbull of the several boilerstlierein. Andv as a consequence, the freight charges on such boilers are comparatively high due to the great bulk, and also to the, added vveghtin the large amount of crating necessary, and also the boilers are injured in shipment, especiallyvvhere it is attempted to ship a number of boilers of the 4larger sizes in a single crate as the boilers* give and can give no mutual ,supporty to each other. Another objection tothe old construction is the large amount of store space required for carrying in stock a full line of boilers. of dierent sizes. e

The object of my invention Ais to providel an improved construction of Wash boiler and cover therefor specially adapting a number of the boilers and'covers for coperation with each other in crating for shipment and with the crating devices in order to reduce the aggregate bulk and Weight of the crated boilers, and the freight charges thereon, and at the same time reduce the liability of injury in shipment,'by rea-` son of the crated boilers mutually vsupporting each other. And a further object isto materially reduce the store space required, to, enable the merchant to carry a full line of boilers of different sizes.

My invention consists in the means I employ to practically' accomplish this object or result as herein shovvn and described, and more particularly specified in the claim. n

The flaringr bodies of the boilers enable them to nest Within each other to the eX- tent preferably of about three-quarters of their height, and preferably six boilersare assembled or nested for shipment in a single crate, .although the number may be increased or diminished as required or desired.

The vends of thestrip of corrugated strawboard of Whichthe loop .or'band is formed are secured together preferably by a Wire C1 inserted through the lapping ends, and

then the ends of the wire twisted as indicated in the drawing. As the loop or band of corrugated strawboard lits flat at its lower end against the bottom of the boiler, and its upper end fits flat against the bottom of the neXt adjacent boiler above, there is no tendency for the loop or band C to tilt, and all strain comes upon it longitudinally of its corrugations, so that the weight of a person standing in one of the boilers will not crush or collapse the corrugated strawboard band C between such boiler and the one next below it. v

D are the boiler covers, each having the customary dome shaped central portion d, rim Z1 and flange Z2 furnished with an internally rolled lower edge da. The covers D of all the boilers are stacked inside the uppermost boiler in a longitudinally and transversely inclined position, the iianges d2 of the boilers being preferably about one half inch wide or so proportioned that the uppermost corner portion of the covers will not extend above the upper edge of the uppermost boiler in which the six covers of all the boilers vare stacked. To enable lthe covers for -all the crated boilers to be thus contained within the uppermost boiler of the crate, the handles F of the covers are made detachable, and placed in the bottom of the uppermost boiler beneath the lowermost cover. The handle of the lowermost cover is preferably applied thereto as the longitudinally and transversely inclined position of the covers leaves ample room for the handle of the lowermost cover. It is an advantage to have the removable handle F applied to the lowermost cover as it thus furnishes an explanation to the hard- Ware dealer of the exact way the removable handles are to be applied to the covers.

The covers D are furnished with slots Z4 to receive the integral attaching lips f of the base members f1 of the handles F, these attaching lips f being bent or clenched down at an angle after they are inserted through the slots in the cover to removably secure the detachable handles to the covers. The bodies of each of the boilers B are preferably surrounded by snug fitting paper wrappers or protecting envelops G of the same shape as the bodies.

I claim si The combination with an external crate, of a plurality of slightly taper body wash boilers nested together one within another wit-hin said crate, with their taper bodies mutually embracing and supporting each other, and a plurality of crating devices interposed between the bottoms of adjacent boilers to prevent their ivedging together, consisting each of a longitudinally rigid and unyielding corrugated strawboard loop with the corrugations extending perpendicularly to the bottoms of the boilers to take the strain of one boiler against the other, the ends of said loop being fastened together and the edges thereof engaging the bottoms of adjacent boilers, and a plurality of covers for said boilers placed one on top of another in a transversely and longitudinally inclined position Within the uppermost boiler, substantially as specified.
