IMPROVEMENT IN BERRY-CUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.l.63,665, dated May 25, 1875; applic ation filed April 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, DEWITT W. KNIFEIN, of Marlborough, Ulster county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Berry-Oups, of which the following is a specification: v
The object of this invention is to render berry-cups more durable than they are now.
The common berry-cup is made witha body fastened in by means of nails or tacks, the shrinking and swelling of which soon makes the cup useless. ure from the berries, and it consequently swells and then shrinks, and soon becomes loose and drops out.
The present invention consists of a double bottom, with the parts placed crosswise of each other, fastened together with tacks or pegs, and one of the parts is provided with tenons, (four, more or less which tenons pass through slot-holes in the body.
Figure l is a horizontal section, showing the bottom and the manner of supporting it in the rim, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1, taken on the line x x.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the body, which is made in the usual manner of a Veneer coiled or thin piece of wood 0r other material, and lapped and fastlhe bottom attracts moist#y ened with nails, or cemented. B is the bottom, made of two thicknesses of veneer or similar thin material, O and D. These parts are fastened together with the grain running at right angles, diagonally or crosswise so as to counteract the tendency to split, and the effects of swelling. One part, l), of the bottom has two or more tenons, E, and the body A is provided with slot-holes E', through which the tenons pass, as seen in the drawing. The other part of the bottom O just tits inside the body, as represented.
By this method of forming the cup the bottom is secured in place and the cup rendered strong and durable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A berry-cup made of wood-veneering, having a bottom of two thicknesses fastened together with the grain of the Wood at right angles, one part having tenons which pass through slots in the body, and hold the bottom to the body, substantially in the manner shown and described.
