Description

J. 0. H1335. ELASTIC-BLOCKS FOR SPLITTINGKINDLING-WOOD. No. 177.517 Patented May16,1876'..
' UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JOHN G. HUBBS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELASTIC BLOCKS FOR SPLITTING KlNDLlNG-WOOD'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,517, dated May 16, 1876; application tiled March 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, JOHN G. HUBBS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Elastic Blocks for Splitting Kindling-Wood, of which the following is a specification: v
Figure 1 is a rear View of my improved splitting-block, partly in section, t0=show the construction; and Fig.2 is a side view of the same, the cover being shown raised.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish a block for splitting kindling-wood which shall be so constructed that wood may be split upmovement by guide-pins D, attached to it, and
which pass down through the springs O, and
' enter holes in the block The space between the blocks A.B is covered, .aud the springs O are concealed by strips of leather, cloth, or other suitable flexible material at: tached to the said blocks.
' The splitting is done upon the top of the block B, and the jar of the blow is received by the springs 0, so that the floor will not be jarred 'or injured.
The upper block A is provided with a cover, E, to hide the marks of the ax, which cover is upholstered to adapt it to serve as a seat, and is hinged at one edge, so that it may be turned back, asshown in Fig. 2, when the block is to be used for splitting wood.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent- 1. The splitting-block formed of the two blocks A B, the interposed springs O, and guide-pins D, and the flexible strips E, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the cover F with the splitting-block A B (l D E, substantially as herein shown and described.
