IMPRVEMENT IN OYSTER-BASKETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,470, dated April 9, 187:?.

Specification describing anew and Improved Oyster-VVaShiu g Basket, invented by CHARLES D. MARTIN, of Port Chester, in the county of Westchester and State of New York.

My invention consists of a basket with woven sides and bottom of dat strips of thin galvanized iron, with Wooden hoops for the top, bound with galvanized wire, and with wooden handles, the saidiron strips being Woven with large meshes to facilitate the washing, and riveted together at the crossings for keeping the vertical and horizontal ribs in their places, and an auxiliary stay-rib is woven in at the bends of the verticals for the bottom, where they cannot well traverse each other, iu such manner as to retain the bands in shape against the action of the weight, which has a constant tendency to straighten out the said bands.

Instead of using wood for the strips A B, as heretofore, I propose to use the galvanized thin sheet-iron strips, and weave them together with meshes about an inch square, more or less, and rivet them together at thecrossiugs, as shown at G, using wood hoops D at the top, one on the inside and one on the outside,

bound to the upper strip B by a galvanized wire, E, using wood handles F, to be fitted between the hoops, and riveted to the strips A B; and around the corners at the bottom, where the verticals are bent down horizontally, I weave in an auxiliary strip, Gr, once or twice around at said bends, to strengthen them more than they can be by each other, as they cannot be interwoven so as to cross each other at said bends.

A basket of this kind will be much stronger and more durable than a basket of the ordinary wood splints, and the strips can be riveted at the crossings to keep them from shifting out of placewith safety, which will not do with the wooden strips, because it weakens them so.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved article of manufacture, being an oyster-washing basket, constructed of lthe galvanized metal strips A B, auxiliary strip G, wooden hoops D, and handles F, and the wire bindings E, all substantially as specified.
