1. KANSTERY. WASHTUB COVERl APPLICATION FILED JULY 5.1916.

UNIE@ 811A@ rairnxrr orarie JACOB KANSTER, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-THIRD TO THOMAS J'. WALSH. AND ONE-THIRD TO FRANK WALSH, BOTI-I OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
WASI-ITUB-COVER.
To aZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JACOB KaNs'rEn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vashtub-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to covers for laundry tubs, and has for its object the improvement of devices of this character in a number of important respects.
Wl lien covers for laundry tubs are made of wooden frames with a covering of metal, as galvanized iron soldered together, as is the customary practice, such covers break readily and speedily become useless and must be discarded. The use of rivets, particularly rivets with exposed heads, in such covers detracts greatly from their appearance and the hammering down of the rivets, particularly with a covering of galvanized iron, is likely to chip olf the coating from the iron so that when exposed to water in use it rapidly rusts out.
In a tub cover made in accordance with my invention the use of rivets, or at least rivets with exposed heads, is avoided.
Othenobjects of my invention will appear in connection with this description and be pointed out in the claims, and with the foregoing and related objects in view, my invention consists of the parts, improvements and combinations herein set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown, for the purpose of illustrating my invention and making it readily understood, one form of construction in which the invention may be embodied.
In said drawing Figure 1 is an isometrical top view of a tub cover constructed in accordance with my invention, parts being broken out to show the construction with greater clearness. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the cover shown in Fig. 1 inverted, and Fig. 3 is a detail vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 3, 3, Fig. 2. In said drawing, 10 indicates the frame of wood or the like material which prefer. bly constitutes part of the cover and over which the metallic covering is formed, although, if desired, such wooden frame may be dispensed with.
The frame in the form shown comprises side and end strips 11 and 12 and also preferably corner blocks 13 which may be trian- Application led July 5, 1916.

gular in form and may serve to reinforce and straighten the strips 11 and 12. The reference character 14 is applied vto designate the principal portion of the metallic covering which is preferably in one piece and may be formed of metal, as heavy tin or galvanized iron. Its corners are suitably cut out and downwardly extending flanges 15 are turned therefrom covering theouter sides of the strips 11 and 12 and on the under side the flanges 15 are turned in on the bottom of the cover, forming a hook and making part of a double interlocked seam as indicated at 16 and 17.
On the interior of the frame, strips 18 are provided, and the same comprises a portion 19 extending under the wooden strips 11 and 12, a portion 20` forming a covering for the inside of the frame strips 11 and 12 and the portion 21 which covers the bottom of the strips 11 and 12 and is formed with a hooked part 22 which coperates with the hook members 16 and 17 of the principal covering portion 14 to form a double interlocked seam as shown at 23. The strips 18 may be described as of substantially U form with one leg longer than the other and having the longer leg formed into a hook to make up for a part of the double seam. vVith a frame which does not embody the corner blocks 13 the inturned metallic covering may be made up of the main frame portion 14 with the flangesl and hooks 16 and 17 and the strips 18 double seamed therewith at the outer and lower edges of the completed cover, but when the corner blocks 13 are provided, which'is preferably the preferred form of cover, the block serving to give added strength, I prefer to make the metallic coverings therefor in the form shown which comprises additional U shaped, preferably metal, ,pieces 24- having a part 25 under the corner blocks and tucked under the portion 14 in the same manner as the part 19 of the strip 18, a portion 26 lining the blocks 13 on the inside of the frame and a part 27 on the bottom of the corner blocks. Such part 27 may extend to and be double seamed with the hooks 16 and 17 of the part 14, but for the double purpose of aording.
a stronger construction and also for utilizing comparatively small pieces of material, which would otherwise be wasted, I preferably make the part 27 to extend but a short way upon the blocks 13 and double seam it with a portion 28 as shown at 29 with the said part provided with hook members 30, 30, which are double seamed With the hooks 16 and 17 of the parts 14 and 15. In this Way a good strong and durable cover may be formed Without the use of solder and also preferably Without the use of rivets. Furthermore, the material is very completely used up and the amount of Waste is minimized While at the same time the cover is strengthened in the manner described.
The main portion 14 may be provided With a groove as 31 preferably extending about the interior margin lof the Wooden frame which serves to strengthen the structure and at the same time give it a neat appearance and to bring the parts together so as to substantially exclude any Water from getting into the joints and into contact with the interior Wooden frame when such Wooden frame is present.
It is to be understood that the precise structure shown is intended merely for the purpose of illustrating and making clear my invention so that it may be readily nnderstood, but that I am not to be limited to such specific usages except as the same are set forth in the appended claims, and that departures therefrom and changes therein may be resorted to in numerous respects Within the scope of my claims and Without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a Washtub cover, a substantially rectangular Wooden frame and a covering therefor of sheet metal extending over the top of the frame and having a marginal extension downward over the sides of the frame, said margin being turned inwardly and provided With a hook, and a plurality of substantially U-shaped sheet metal members having one leg longer than the other, the shorter leg being tucked under the Wooden frame and between it and the top cover and the longer leg being provided With a hook which together With the first named hook are secured together in a double interloclred seam.
2. In a Washtub cover, a Wooden frame, a
sheet metal covering therefor extending over the top and the outer sides, and sheet metal members covering the under sides of the frame and extending upwardly close to and covering the inner sides thereof and being interlocked with the covering for the top and outer sides in a double seam extending about and reinforcing the cover at the bottom thereof.
3. In a Washtu'b cover, Ia Wooden frame, a sheet metal covering therefor extending over the top and the outer sides, and sheet metal members tucked between said covering and the top of the frame and covering the inner and under sides of the frame and double seamed to the top and outer sides in a double seam extending about the under side of the cover at substantially the periphery thereof.
4. In a Washtub cover, a Wooden frame comprising corner blocks, a sheet metal covering therefor extending over the top and outer sides, and sheet metal members covering the inside and the bottom of the frame and corner blocks and being interlocked With the covering for the top and outer sides in a double seam on thel bottom side of the cover.
' 5. In a Washtub cover, a substantially rectangular frame including corner blocks, a covering therefor of sheet metal extending over the top and outer sides of the frame, sheet metal coverings for the inner and nnder sides of the frame tucked between the top covering and the frame and interlocked in the frame bottom With the covering for the outer sides and sheet metal coverings fory the corner blocks tucked between the top covering and the frame and covering the inner sides of the blocks, and sheetmetal members double seamed therewith on the bottom of the corner blocks and also double seamed with the covering for the outer sides, said top covering having a groove formed therein about the inner margin of the frame.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I hereto set my hand, this 1st day of July,
JACOB KANSTER.
