Description
Jan. 1, 1-935. 1 G. LORING COMBINED METAL AND CANVAS BASKET Filed Dec. l5, 1933 Patented Jan. 1,1935
John Watertown,'Mass.,assignor to Steele Supply Company, Cambridge, Mass;
w-"Mypresent invention is a novel and improved receptacle, container, basket, hamper, or the like, comprising, preferably, atopor upper portion of tektilefmaterial and the lower or bottom portion of; openwork metal, such as woven wire'.
I Also novel means, whereby the canvas or textile material and metal or woven wire are interlocked,
overlapped and joinedto provide a neat, strong, I and rserviceable construction to protect the edge 10" part of the metal and to afford suitablereinforc ing and uniting of the canvas or metal, constitute important features of the invention.
, Heretofore it has been customary to make canvas receptacles, containers, baskets, or the like I with various methods of reinforcing the same by outside metal, wire, but in my present invention,
I I have actually constructed the sides and bottom of the basket partly of canvas and partly of openwork wire, and it is this combination that I consider broadly new and which I wish to claim herein broadly, as well as the process of manu facturing the same.
My improved container is most desirable and useful in various arts, such for example, as laundry and steaming baskets. In various types of containers, it is important to effect a drying or draining action, and particularly articles to be I tion and bottom, I produce alonger lasting and dried during transportation or storing, such for example as in thecase of any baskets where articles are contained and steamed, such steaming necessarily deteriorating the lower portions of the sides as well as the bottom partof the canvas or leather basket. I
This openwork feature enables my improved container to be utilized for'many other purposes not heretofore possible with a canvas articleof this kind. Thus, for example, I can use my present improved article in bakeries where warm bread is transported, heretofore impractical with a closed receptacle. r
By my present invention of combining an openwork'wire bottom or part of the lower side porbetter servicing article, preventing the wearing out, rotting, or deterioration of the canvas and obtaining the benefits of the openwork structure at the lower portion. By having the metal of non-corrosive material or well ga1vanized,.the lasting quality of my improved basket is greatly enhanced.
My improved basket combined textile and metal structure, as above briefly outlined, is particularly useful in various arts in addition to laundry steaming baskets, as above noted. Thus in carrying and transporting newly varnished spindles, cops, or the like, whereit is important to have the air circulating to dry the same;
in storing and transporting variousarticles of 1 wooden manufacture, where it is desirable to have the samefree from sawdust, etc, mycombined canvasand openworkwire'bottom basket efiects an automatic self-cleaning action, allowing the sawdust to drop out during transportation. In
last factories,a-sho e shops, and theylike my im-' proved receptacle is very 'useful.
An important feature of my present invention consists in the process of manufacture whereby I unite in an eflicient, economical, strong, and reinforced construction the edge portion of the canvas part and. wire part. This is especially important where openwork wire mesh is used, as I do not have to rely upon a selvage edgeof either the canvas or the metal mesh to unite and protect both by my present method of construction.
Other features, novel combinations and advantages will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed.
Referring to the drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of my present invention,
Fig. 1 is a side view of my novel canvas and openwork metal basket;
Fig. 2 is an end view;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on'an enlarged scale on the line.3--3 of Fig. '1;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on an enlarged scale on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view through a corner showing the interlocking of the wire andcanvas.
As shown in the drawing, a canvas receptacle, container, or basket of suitable design, size, and type is designated generally at ,1, having a usual metallic frame designated at 2, 3, and 4 on which the canvas portion is stretched, and'with handles 6, 6. Preferably the wire framework 2 and 3 may'also be integral with or secured to the bot- "tomcross-frames which are designated separate- MSW bottom 12 and is preferably extended slightly upward, as illustrated, to give an openwork action on the sides and ends. This may, if desired, be of greater or less proportion depending on the above described afiords a" firm, strong, service- 3 able basket or container, wherein the lower open uses to which the container or basket is to be put. Preferably we construct the canvas part where it is to be interlocked or joinedwith'the metal portion double, with the flap l l attached thereto either on the inner surface of the portion lor on the outer surface, as desired, by suitable fastenings or a heavy seam 16, thus forming a pocket around the lower portion of the canvas part in whichthe upper edgeof the metal wire.
It will be appreciated that the. construction work part is ideally constructed for self-clean ing, clearing, air circulation of the contents,
while the upper part of textile material is ideally formed to prevent injury; to, the articles, which are usually throwninto the container and basket, and which also gives si-zerand capacity. without undue weight.-
Theupperportion of canvasand the lower pertionof metal aiford' a construction overcoming the. objections of former canvas containers for certain uses,- wherein'the bottom of the canvas container wvas quickly worn out,- deteriorated, rottfid, and destroyed from accumu lations of moisture waten dirt, etc,
I believe that my novelcornbination of openwork rnetal and canvas fora receptacle, basket,
metal mesh in 3 or container of the kind described is a distinct novelty and that the process of uniting the same is new, and I therefore wish to claim the same broadly herein.
Also, a plurality of openwork parts or portions with intermediate canvas layers might be utilized while still carrying out my idea and invention, and the bottom may be formed of a plurality of strips of openwork metal to give the selfcleaning, draining, drying: and circulating result with intermediate strips of canvas, if desired.
In any construction my novel combination of joint between the canvas and metal edge or its l equivalent would, it i's believed, be important and useful and would, therefore, be covered by the appended claim.
- As a new article of manufacture, a receptacle, container, basket, or the like having its sides and end portions formed of canvas, with a pocket opening at the bottom edgeiandwith theentire bottom portion formed'of openwork woven :wire
metaLsaid bottom-portion havinggthe edge. turned upwardly around both sides and 'both ends and extending-into the pocket of'the canvas sides, and fastenings securing said metal edges and canvas pocket together, whereby said con-z tainer hasa smoothinterior: to receive the eon-' tents and a woven wire openwork bottomportion topermit'drying and ventilation.
