Description

L H. c. JONES.
Improvement in Baskets.
No. 130,138, Patented Aug. 6,1872.
WiTNESSES= INVENTOR:
UNITED STATEs HORACE O. JONES, OF DOWAGIAG, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,138, dated August 6, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, HORACE O. J oNEs, of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates in its nature to a new combination of old parts, the object being to produce an improved basket of the class known as stave-baskets, a drawing of which accompanies this, illustrating my invention,
and making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows a horizontal sectional View of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a vertical transverse section through the bottom of the same.
Letters of reference marked on the drawing refer to similar letters marked in this specification, of which A represents the laminae or staves of which the body of the basket is composed. These staves are constructed in the usual manner of constructingstaves for wooden or board bottomed baskets, and extend from the top of the basket to the base, where they are confined between the disk B on the upper and inner side of the bottom, and the hoop O and smaller disk D on the under and outer side of the basket-bottom. These staves are so arranged as to overlap each other in such a manner that each stave forms a part of the outer and a part of the inner side of the body of the basket, with one edge of each overlapping one edge of the next succeeding stave, which order is maintained throughout the entire circle of the body of the basket. The disk B and hoop O are made equal in size, and are attached to each other by means of nails driven through the hoop and staves and clinched in the disk B, The smaller disk confines the points of the staves A by means of nails driven through it and through the staves and clinched in the disk B also. Thus the said staves will be nailed at two points in the bottom of the basket, and the top will be hooped and provided with handles in the usual manner of hooping and handleing stavebaskets, and need not be described here.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim The combination consisting of the overlapping stav'es A, disk B, hoop O, and disk D, when constructed, arranged, and combined as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
