Description

H. c. JONES.
Improvement in Baskets.
No. 130,136, I Patented Aug. 6,1872.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR:
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
HORACE O. JONES, OF DOWAGIAO, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BASKETS.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,136, dated August 6, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, HORACE O. JONES, of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Baskets, of
which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to the construction of a stave basket; and consists in the combination of a peculiar arrangement of the staves forming the sides of the basket with the well-known board bottom, whereby substantial advantages are obtained where a basket is required for handling meal and fine grain, and is equally well adapted to handling coarse grain.
In the accompanying drawing, making a part 1 of this specification, Figure 1 shows a top view A extend to the top of the basket, and are confined, by means of nails, between the hoops O D, thus forming the sides of the basket by overlapping one edge of each stave over one edge of the next succeeding stave, which process is continued until the entire circle of the body of the basket is formed.
It will be seen that this arrangement gives to some extent the united strength of all the staves in the basket to'resist a pressure or blow applied to any part of the body of the basket, and consequently in this basket all inside hoops, except the top one, may be dispensed with, thus leaving the sides and bottom of the' basket very smooth, having no shoulders or angles on which meal or small grain can lodge in the process of handling such substances, and thereby adding materially to the advantage and comfort of the operator. I hoop the top of this basket and attach the handles in the usual manner of hooping and handleing stave baskets.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- In a stave basket constructed as described, the combination of the staves A with the boardbottom B, when constructed, arranged, and combined substantially as set forth.
Witnesses: HORACE O. JONES.
