IMPROVEMENTn IN BASKETS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, vROBERT WTAN ORNUM, of Racine, in the county of Racine and in the State of lhfisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a wooden basket, as will be hereinafter more fully set l forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section, of my basket.

A represents the bottom of the basket. This bottom is beveled out on the under side, something a-fter the form of an inverted tea-saucer. It is also beveled olf upon the edge, more or less, to give the proper form to the basket, and formed with a shoulder, a., near the lower edge, for the body of the basket to rest upon. The body (or sides) of the basket is made of sheets B B, made of two, four, or more pieces, and cut to give the proper shape to the basket. The sheets B B are first securely nailed to the edge of the bottom A, and the joint then covered by a metal hoop, C, and all securely nailed to the bottom. rI his metal hoop G secures and holds the sheets iu place, and protects the corner from wear. Across the under side of the bottom A, and up the sides of the basket, run metal bands or yokes D D, the ends of which are passed over the inside hoop b at the top of the basket, thus taking all the lift, and consequently all the strain, off from the body of the basket. The body of the basket is bound at the top by an inside hoop, b, and an outside hoop', b. The sheets are fur ther held in place in the center by two hoops,

tom, and covered by the metal hoop C, and g then the filling is woven in and the body of the basket made. The yokes are then put ou and run up under the lling and over a standard, and doubled over the inside hoop, the sameas on the sheet-basket.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the bottom A, made of a single piece of wood, provided with the circumferential shoulder a, with a body, B, the metallic base-hoop C, and the exterior yokes D D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
