Description
H. C. JONES. v
Stave-Basket.
Patentedluly l3,1875.,
N. PETERS PHOTO-UTHOGRAPNER WASH "mos n C UMTED STATES PATENT ()FFIOE.
HORACE G. JONES, OF DOVVAGIAG, MICHIGAN.
, IMPRCVEMENT IN STAVE BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,4l6, dated J uly 13, 1875; application filed February 26, 1875.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE (J. J mm, of Dowagiac, county of Cass and State of Michigan, rhave invented a new and Improved Stave Basket; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in Whicl1- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved stave basket. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in a certain construction and combination of parts forming the basket, as will be hereinafter de scribed and specifically claimed.
My basket, as shown in the drawings, is formedwith an inside lining of staves, A, which terminate downward just within the inner edge of the bottom hoops B O, and upward at the upper edge of middle inside and outside hoops D and E. Outside of this lining, which is between the aforesaid hoops, the basket is constructed with an outside series of staves, F, which extend from side to side, so as to form the bottom as well as the body of the basket, as shown. These staves pass between the hoops. The basket is further constructed with an inside broad lining band, G, which extends from the top of the staves F to the middle hoops. A top hoop, H, and handles I I are provided upon the basket in the usual manner. The edges of the lower ends of the short lining staves are made to match one another on the bottom of the basket, by cutting away a portion on one side of each stave in the ordinary manner. The short lining stavesand long outside staves are riveted together between the hoops in the usual manner, and the broad band, the top hoop, and the long staves are also riveted together in the usual manner.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the middle fastening-rivets are not passed through the broad band, but through the staves and middle hoops. This construction and combination overcome the objection the form of the basket, or tears away from its.
fastenin gs.
In my plan of construction, the short staves are not confined by the lower end of the broad band, and the basket is stiffened at its middle, and the lining is left free to swell and shrink atits lower edge without afi'ecting the lining staves, and the outside staves below their top.
I am aware that a basket constructed with long outside staves, short interior staves, extending from the bottom of the basket to half its height, and a broad upper interior skirtingboard overlapping the tops of the interior staves, and fastened to both the center and top outside hoops, is not new, the same being shown in the United States Patent No. 149,264, granted March 31,1874, to H. H. and J. K.
Stevens, and therefore I lay no claim to such device; but
What I do claim is The stave basket, having longoutside staves F, short interior staves A, extending from the bottom of the basket to the inner and outer hoops D E, which embrace the center of the basket, and secured between said hoops by rivets, and the broad interior skirting-board G, extending from the top of the basket to about the top of the center hoop, fastened at its upper edge to the basket, but left free at its lower edge, whereby the shrinkage or warping of the skirting-board will not affect the staves of the basket, substantially as set forth.
