Urirn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER H. COE, OF PROVIDENCE, RIIODE ISLAND.
DEVICE FOR APPLYING METALLIC LEAF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,849, dated February 26, 1901.
Application filed February 20, 1899. Berial No. 706,271. (No model.)
To all whom, it ntcty concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. COE, a citizen of the United States, residing at and whose post-office address is No. 165 Evanston street, Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvementin Devices for Applying Metallic Leaf from a Package-Roll, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a conveniently-operated device for applying metallic leaf from a package-roll to the surface which is to be decorated; and it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved device for applying metallic leaf for decorating purposes. Fig. 2 represents a rear edge view when held in the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a side view with the hinged side turned back at a right angle with the plane of the opposite side and shown in section to fully illustrate the adj Listing-screw for the tension-spring in side view without obstruction. Fig. i represents a side view of the pressure-brush and its holder separate from the case. Fig. 5 represents a central vertical section of the brush-holder. Fig. 6 represents a side view of the pressure-brush separate from the holder, and Fig. 7 represents a forward end view of the brush-holder.
In the drawings, A represents the case, in which the spirally-wound package-roll B is held to rotate upon the bearing-stud C, the said package-roll being suitably frictioned to prevent the loose rotation of the packagemoll in unwinding by means of the flat spring D, which is adapted to friction the side of the package-roll, the said spring being attached at its end a to the hinged side E of the case and provided with a perforation 0, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) adapted to pass over the end of the bearing-stud 0 when the side E is closed, as shown in Fig. 2. The hinged side E is also provided with the adjustingscrew 0), by means of which the pressure of the spring D against the side of the packingroll may be adjusted to suit the requirements of the case. The hinged side E is also provided with a perforation b, adapted to receive the end of the outer stud F, and to the outer side of the side E of the case is secured the hook e, which is pivoted at the point f and adapted to enter the notch or groove 9 at the end of the stud F to lock the closed side E firmly in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A washer his placed upon the stud G and secured to the side E of the case to prevent the side of the package-roll from hearing against the flat inner surface of the side E.
. The pressure-brush G consists of the flexible brushj, provided at its upper portion with a ferrule It, by means of which the brush is adapted to fit the socket Z of the brush-holder H, the said brush-holder being provided with the transverse tube m, which loosely fits upon the stud F, and the side E of the case is provided with a perforation n, adapted to receive the pin 0 of the brush-holder H to lock the same in position and prevent the rotation of the brush-holder upon its supporting-stud F. The removable brush G is retained in its socket l by means of the set-screw p. At the lower side of the brush-holder is placed the guide I, which serves to hold the supportingstrip and the metallic leaf in proper position for continued use when the brush has been raised from the surface 15, which is to be decorated, the said guide serving to prevent the supporting-strip from being thrown out of line with the pressure-brush, by means of which the metallic leaf r is transferred from the supporting-strip s to the surface t.
In the package-roll B the metallic leaf r, which is indicated by the dotted line, is held at the inner side of the supporting-strips s, and when the package-roll B has been placed upon the bearing-stud O and the hinged side E closed upon the stud F and secured in its closed position by means of the hook e the supporting-strip is to be threaded between the guide I and the under side of the brush G, the metallic leaf 1" being at the under side of the supporting-strip s, as shown in Fig. 3, and by means of the guide I the metallic leaf will at all times be retained in position for ready application to the surface If.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a device for applying metallic leaf from a package-roll, the combination of the holding-case provided with the hinged side,
the stud, and. the locking means engaging With guide for holding the supporting-strip in line the stud, with the removable holder for the with the under side of the brush, substan- [o pressure-brush, held upon the stud, and the tially as described.
pressure-brush removable from its holder,
5 substantially as described. WALTER 2. In a device for applying metallic leaf Witnesses: from a package-Poll, the combination of the SOCRATES SOHOLFIELD,
package-roll, and the pressure-brush, with the M. F. BLIGH.
