Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LVVlLLIAM R. HEYLMUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iola, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Memory-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for holding memoranda which is in the form of a finger ring, the primary object being to provide a ring having means for holding a piece of cardboard or paper having memoranda thereon in concealed position against the palmar surface of the finger to which the ring is attached, so that the person wearing the ring will be constantly aware of'the presence of the memoranda and thus cannot readily forget the same.
The invention has for an object to provide a device of the character described wherein means for clasping the memoranda bearing sheet to the ring may be readily operated into either operative or inoperative position when the ring is removed from the finger, but which will be securely held in operative position while the ring is in position upon the finger.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which is of extreme simplicity in construction, which is neat in appearance and which may be manufactured at a very small cost.
The invention consists in the features of construction combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accom panying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an inverted perspective View of the device in use; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a ring constructed in accordance with the invention showing the clasps in inoperative position; Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the clasps in operative position within the same; Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional View through a modified form of the device, showing the clasps in inoperative position; Fig. 5 is a similar View showing the clasps in operative position; and, Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a further modification of the ring proper.
Referring to the drawing and in particular to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, it will be seen that I have provided a finger ring 1, having an arcuate spring member 2 centrally attached therein and adapted normally to bear evenly against the inner periphery of the ring. This ring is provided adjacent each extremity of the spring member 2 with a lateral slot 3 in which is pivotally mounted a clasp 4E by means of a pivot pin 5. This clasp includes a short arm'6 adapted for engagement with the corresponding end portion of the spring member 2 and a long clasp arm 7 which extends without the slot 8 and is adapted to engage the outer periphery of the ring, to clasp the adjacent edge of a memoranda sheet 7 against the same on the palmar surface of the finger, as shown particularly in Fig. 1. Upon reference to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the coacting clasp members will be held in inoperative position, due to engagement of the spring extremities with the outer'faces 8 of the short arms thereof, whereas, in Fig. 3, the clasp members will be maintained in operative position due to the engagement of the spring extremities with the inner faces 9 of the said short arms, it being understood that movement of the clasp members into either position will cause inward deflection of the spring extremities.
In Fig. 5, I have shown the spring member 2 set within an arcuate recess or groove 10 provided in the inner periphery of the ring, so that the said spring member will not prove an interruption to the inner surface of the ring when the clasp members are in either operative or inoperative position, and which will deflect inwardly from the inner surface of the ring to a slight extent only, thus permitting operation of the clasps while the ring is in place upon the wearers finger.
In Fig. 6, I have shown a modified form of ring body (the clasp mechanism being omitted) which is in segmental form, with its ends 11 terminating at a distance from each other. In this modified construction of the ring, the same may be constructed of thin, resilient metal, so that the side portions 12 thereof, will gently engage the sides of the finger, thus serving to retain the same in position upon fingers of slightly different sizes. Thus, few stock sizes of rings may be manufactured, each of which will accommodate itself to fingers included within a certain range of sizes, it being understood that the same form of clasp mechanism is employed in this ring construction.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a simply constructed clasp ring which is adapted for use in securing memoranda sheets to a persons finger in such a position that the person cannot readily forget the presence of the same, and which thus serves as an aid to the memory. Other uses to Which the device may be put may become apparent in practice.
l/vhat is claimed is:
1. A device of the class described compris ing an annular body having a pair of lateral slots opening through its inner and outer faces, a clasp member pivotally mounted Within each slot and including a short inner arm and a long outer arm, and an arcuate spring secured to the inner periphery of the said body for engagement With the short arms of the clasps, the outer arms of the said clasps being extended toward each other and adapted to engage the outer face of the body.
2. A device of the class described comprising an annular body having a pair of -Within the said groove and medially con nected to the body With its extremities eugaged with the short arms of the said clasps, the outer arms of the said clasps being adapted to be positioned in close proximity to the outer face of the body when in operative position.
