UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM W. KAUFMAN, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO RES MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
DETAGHABLE ROLLER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADAM IV. KAUFMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective roller especially designed to be applied to toilet-paper holders, its arrangement and construction being such that the roller, when inserted within a roll of toilet-paper and thereafter adjusted to a holder, will automatically lock, whereby the roller and paper-roll contained therein cannot be removed until the roll is exhausted, thus rendering theft of the paper in its entirety impossible.
lvhile the primary object of the invention is as stated above, it should be understood that the roller may also be utilized for towel racks or the like in instances where a quick detachable roller is required.
WVith the above objects in view, the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a plan view partly broken away of a holder equipped with a spindle embodying the features of my invention; Fig. 2, an elevation of the same with parts broken away and parts in section to better illustrate the invention.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 indicates a bracket provided with rigid arms 2, 2*, having bearing apertures 3, 3*, adapted to receive separable members 4, 5, of a detachable spindle. The spindle -member 5 comprises a hollow shell, which is revolubly mounted in aperture 3 of the bracket-arm 2, a head 6 of the spindle-member 5 being adapted to abut the outer face of said bracket-arm adjacent to its aperture. The opposite end of the spindle-member 5 is fitted into a countersunk annular groove 7, that is disposed about the inner edge of the bearing aperture 3, of bracket-arm 2 Fitted through the aperture 3 of this arm is a plug 8, which plug, together with a head 9 that extends therefrom, constitutes the oppo- Specification of Letters Patent.

site detachable spindle-member, the head 9 being adapted to engage the face of the bracket-arm 2 The plug 8 extends into the spindle-member 5, terminating with a co-nical head 8*, which head serves as a guide to facilitate insertion of this member within the spindle-member 5. The plug 8 is also provided with a flattened face that serves as a seat for a fiat spring 10, which spring is secured to said plug. The free end of the spring is provided with a lug 11 that is adapted to engage an aperture 12 in the spindle-member 7, and when engaged, the lug thus locks the two members together.
In assembling the parts, a roll of paper is inserted upon the outer spindle-member 5 as the same is pushed through the aperture 3 of the bracket-arm, the end of the spindle being adapted to socket within the annular recess 7 of bracketarm 2*, which recess forms a support for this end of said spindle. The lockingmember 4 is then inserted through the aperture 3 of bracket-arm 2 being forced inwardly until the face of its head 9 abuts the adjacent face of said bracket-arm 2 and in this position the lug 11 of the flat spring carried by said member is alined with the aperture in the spindlemember. The spindle-member is then rotated until the lug 11 will engage the aperture, which it enters due to pressure exerted by the spring. The spindle as a whole is then looked within the bracket and cannot be detached until the roll of toilet-paper has been practically exhausted, whereby access may be had to the lug 11, which can then be depressed by the finger or any accessible tool and the parts can then be separably removed from the bracket for the purpose of renewing the toilet-paper roll.
I claim:
A holder comprising apertured bracket arms, one of which apertures is provided with a counter sunk annular groove, a centrally apertured hollow shell fitted into the arm apertures, the shell being provided at one end with a head that abuts one of the bracket arms, the opposite end being open and fitted into the annular counter sunk groove of the opposite bracket arm, a plug fitted through the annular groove apertures of aforesaid bracket arm, the plug being extended into the open end of the shell and provided with a head that engages said last mentioned annular grooved bracket arm, a
flat spring secured to said plug and a lug the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscarried by the spring engageable With the consin in the presence of two Witnesses.
