ANTOINE SQURS-IN, ST. LOUIS, MISlSOURI. Letters Patent No.- 66,746, dated July 16, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIFTING TOP FOR GARRIAGES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ANTOINE SOURSIN, of the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shifting Tops for Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the'following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters-of reference marked thereon. r I
This invention relates to a certain device of knobs and loops, attached to the shifting rail and to the-seat of the vehicle, whereby the former may be readily detached from the letter when the top is to be taken ed, and then again easily and firmly united when the top is to be replaced To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improved shifting top, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation Figure of the drawings is a side elevation of the hoops or'bows of a carriage-top, attached to a shifting rail of the improved pattern.
Figure 2 is a top plan of the same.
Figure'3 is a rear elevation of the same.
Figure 4 is a plan of the seat of the vehicle, fitted with loopsof, the improved construction.
S is the seat of the vehicle, to which there are attached a number of loops, a, formed of sheet metal. The upper ends of these loops extend above and to the outside of the back and ends of the seat. All that portion of them which is outside of the lines 3 y in fig. 4, projects from the seat in a horizontal plane, and each of these projections is perforated with a-circular orifice, 2:, from which an elongated slot, :12, projects on one side. The shifting rail E sustains the hoops Z1 in the usual manner, and has a series of knobs, a, securely fixed to and projecting from its'bottom edge; the number of the said knobs corresponding with the number of the loops a applied to thc seat. Each of the knobs a, is provided with a screw-nut, a, having a thumb-piece, a extending therefrom on one of its sides. The horizontal section of the nuts a a is such that the said nuts will just'easily pass through the perforations x x of loops a. When the shifting rail is to be put on the seat the nuts a a are to be turned in such directions as to allow the pieces a to pass readily through the slots 9:, then, after the said nuts have all passed through to the bottoms of the said loops, the thumb-pieces a will be turned around to one side, by which action they will be screwed tightly up to the bottom of the loop-pieces. The lower ends of the knob as should be riveted up somewhat, so as to prevent their nuts from working elf when the carriage is in motion. 1
Having described my invention, what I claim, is
The combination and arrangement of the seat A, its loops a, and the knobs a, the shifting rail B, substantially as set forth.
