Letters Patent No. 63,457, dated April 2, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIFTING-RAILS FOR GARRIAGES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ALONZO E. BAILEY, of Middleville, in the county of Hcrkimer, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shifting-Rails for Buggies and Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the-accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification:
This improvement relates to the manner in which the rail for the back and the rail for the top are shifted from one vehicle to another, and the invention consists in so attaching those rails to the pivot end of straps which are permanently fastened to the seat, that the rails may be readily removed or shifted and then as readily be replaced when desired, and also in the construction of the top rail, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a. plan or top view of a buggy or wagon-seat, with the rails attached according to my plan.
Figure 2 is an end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a buggy or wagon-seat. B represents iron or metallic straps or stays firmly secured to the seat by screws or rivets, and whose outer ends form pivots to which the rails are attached and by which they are supported. C represents the back rail, and D the top rail. Holes are made through the top rail and through the ends of the back rail, which correspond with the pivots on the stays B, so that they can be shipped on to the pivots, where they are held in place by keys or straps, as seen in the drawing, or in any suitable manner. To allow the back rail to be raised a suitable distance above the seat, pieces E are attached to its lower edge, which drop down to the pivot, with holes through their lower ends, which slip over the pivots, where they are fastened by the key, the same as the ends of the rail. There are key-holes through the pivots for the purpose of securing them as seen.- The top rail D has pivots formed on it for the purpose of attaching the buggy-top in the usual manner. The rails may be made of iron or steel or of any suitable material. The simplicity of this arrangement will enable all to understand it at a glance, and its great convenience must render it valuable to the public.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pivots B, back rail 0, composed of one piece, and having pendent pieces, the lower ends of which fit over said pivots B upon the back of the rest A; and top rail D, composed of one piece and fitting over the pivots B, substantially as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
