Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIc-E.
JoINvILLE'F. rowLEn, on ALLIANCE, oHIo.
IMPROVEMENT lN DASH-RAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,532, dated April 16, 1878; application filed February 4, 1878.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, J oINvILLE F. FoWLER, of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dash-Rails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of a dash-board constructed with my improved rail. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line x, and Fig. 3 is a similar section on the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. My invention relates to rails for dashboards; and it consists in the construction of the rail and its combination with the dashpanel, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A is the dash, which consists of one or more leather panels stretched over an iron frame. Each panel consists, as usual, of two pieces of leather stitched together along the edges, as shown at a.
B is the rail, which consists of a Yrigid metallic rod having a longitudinal groove, b, and two or more clips, c c, made in'one piece with it, projecting downward from the rail on each side ofthe groove b.
The rail is placed on the dash by inserting the upper stitched edge a of the leather apron bility and elegance of appearance.
clinch the clips to the frame.
My improved dashrail combines cheapness` of manufacture with great strength and dura- It is made, preferably, of malleable iron, and may be japanned, silver or nickel plated, gilt, or otherwise ornamented, in any desired manner. It is not necessarily round, but may be made hexagonal, octagonal, or of any other desired configuration.
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim a flexible slotted vdashrail, nor do I claim, broadly, a slotted or grooved molding, as I am well aware that these have been in use before; but
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure lby Letters Patent ofthe United States, is-
The rigid metallic molding or dash-rail B, having longitudinal groove b, rectangular in its cross-section, and clips c c nade in one piece with the rail, substantiallyr as and for the purpose herein shown a-nd described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OIN VILLE F. FOWLER.
